8. "Preserved in amber." What an indictment.
And "no Iraqi terrorism against the United States" from the time they tried to get Poppy until we invaded THEM.

George Tenet WAS on the job. Bushco wasn't.

Ooooh lovely. The Clinton administration "went to battlestations" and foiled a major attack. If BushCo had, they might have found out that al qaeda operatives were in the country.

This is brutal. No pussyfooting at all.

Clarke and Rand Beers quit for the same reasons. Pressure from the Bush Administration to find some Iraq connection to Al Qaeda. Beers has also been one of Clarkes closest friends for years. Kerry is staying nice and laid back this week and waiting for the media to start this one rolling.

wondering if I'm doing the right thing by them by continuing to live in Manhattan. On the morning of 9/11, I got them out of school and we watched the towers burn while walking home. I consider George Bush the number one threat to my children's lives. I get scared shitless just thinking about another four years of him in power.

I mean, Clarke is tight with Beers, Beers is tight with Kerry... they had to know this was coming out this week, right? Perhaps I'm not giving Kerry's team enough credit for forethought, but this looks like sloppy planning or damned inconvenient timing. Hopefully, Kerry will be able to jump right on this as soon as he gets back...

Plenty to Blame for Terror - Republican Lawmaker
By REUTERS

Published: March 21, 2004

Filed at 6:34 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A former top U.S. security expert is harshly critical of the Bush administration for failing to act on terror threats before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks but a Republican senator said on Sunday the blame reaches back to former Democratic President Bill Clinton.

In a book to be launched this week and in a CBS "60 Minutes" interview to air on Sunday night, former counter-terrorism official Richard Clarke said Bush "ignored terrorism for months" when he took office in early 2001.

But appearing on CNN's "Late Edition," U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter said there were many to blame for the failures, going back to the Clinton administration in which Clarke also had a top role as counter-terrorism coordinator.

"There is a lot of blame to go around in all quarters," said Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican. "I think if we had put all of the factors together in advance ... then 9/11 could have been prevented."

Clarke, who headed a cybersecurity board before resigning from the Bush White House in February 2003 after 30 years of government service, is one of several former Clinton administration officials scheduled to testify on Tuesday and on Wednesday before the independent commission investigating the 2001 hijacked airplane attacks in New York and on the Pentagon that killed some 3,000 people.

86. You aren't implying that a democratic congress is a prerequisite,
are you? I admit the bar is higher, but I think impeachment absolutely MUST be kept on the radar. It is possible. I think very few of the repukes in congress are insiders in the BFEE cabal. Admittedly, they are sheep, and they know the hand that feeds them. But there is a threshold. And even if that ultimate threshold is never reached, we DUers I think are well-advised to not only not dismiss the possibility of impeachment, but with intellect and reasoned argument, to promote it.

65. My favorite detail -- Bush* with his picture-cards.
Edited on Sun Mar-21-04 08:23 PM by enough
This whole interview was devastating. It almost seemed other-worldly, hearing someone on mainstream media dealing blow after blow, over and over, no letup, no apologies, so calmly and so forcefully.

But the neatest little detail was when Clarke talked about Bush* having asked for playing cards with the pictures of the Al Qaeda leaders on them, so he could cross them out when they were captured or killed.

He said he could imagine George Bush* sitting by a fire with his playing cards crossing out pictures, while every day there are more new terrorists being created by what we have done in Iraq.

What an image.

90. My note to the folks at 60 Minutes

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone at 60 Minutes for the exceptional interview with Richard Clarke on this weeks (3/21) program. It was refreshing, to be kind, to see honest professional journalism find its way once again to "mainstream" television. The interview was presented in a fair and open manner, letting Mr. Clarke speak for himself and presenting rebuttal when called for.

In times like this, when questioning the President is seen by some as akin to treason itself, you said what needed to be said, and what many of us have feared for some time. May this interview yield many others, and may others now run with the courage that CBS has shown.

Thank you again,

xxxxxx

101. This weeks Newsweek Cover Story:
NEWSWEEK: In the Months Before 9/11, Justice Department Curtailed Highly Classified Program to Monitor Al Qaeda Suspects in the U.S.
Sunday March 21, 10:51 am ET
'They Came in There With Their Agenda and was not on it,' Says Former Counterterrorism Chief Clarke of Bush Administration

NEW YORK, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Newsweek has learned that in the months before 9/11, the U.S. Justice Department curtailed a highly classified program called "Catcher's Mitt" to monitor Al Qaeda suspects in the United States, after a federal judge severely chastised the FBI for improperly seeking permission to wiretap terrorists. During the Bush administration's first few months in office, Attorney General John Ashcroft downgraded terrorism as a priority, choosing to place more emphasis on drug trafficking and gun violence, report Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff and Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas in the March 29 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, March 22).

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040321/nysu007a_1.html

This is a result of Newsweek investigating Clarkes claims and is independent verification that the Bush Justice Department killed the program that was set up to monito Al Qaeda Agents in the United States.

113. Dick Clarke and Leslie
I'm old enough to remember when 60 Minutes first started and this interview ranks up there with the best ones. Leslie was very good. Frankly, it was very scary to hear bush flipping through the playing cards. Is this how this man conducts foreign policy? I'm sure that the White House is going to portray Richard Clarke as another disgruntled ex-staffer - ala Paul O'Neill - but I don't think its going to work. This morning on 'Today' Monalisa Rice just talked the party line. I think this is major.
