Is there a name for when people mistake DU for the "real world"?
It seems to me that so many posters make this particular mistake. They conflate the actions and reactions of the posters on DU with the rest of the world.

EXAMPLES:

"If Obama supporters were more gracious..."
"Does the Obama camp want the support of Hillary-backers?"
"If the supporters of Obama are any indication..."
"I have decided to go with Hillary because the Obama side is so rude..."

I was just wondering if there was a name for this weird logical fallacy. It seems likely related to issues of isolation, echo-chamber psychology, etc.

It is as fascinating as it is disturbing.

4. Egocentric? That's not quite it though.
You mean believing that DU IS the world, not just a forum online, and confusing what is here for total reality with the rest of the world?

22. It is an example of prejudice and out-group homogeneity
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 04:25 PM by I Vote In Pittsburgh
Prejudice starts with the creation of groups - for example, Hillary supporters and Obama supporters. The environment on GDP encourages us to make groups based on these distinctions. A consequence of this categorization is out-group homogeneity, which is the belief that "they" are all alike. My social psychology textbook (im a psych minor) explains it as follows: "Group members tend to perceive those in the out-group as more similar to each other (homogeneous) than they really are, as well as more homogeneous than the in-group members are." (Aronson, Wilson & Akert). This belief often persists even in the face of extreme logical fallacy. Since Hillary/Obama supporters in the real world fit the group criteria, we extend our beliefs about DU Hillary/Obama supporters to them.

I often wonder what it would be like to have these conversations IRL, face to face, beverage of choice in hand around a round table.

I think we'd be a lot kinder to one another.

29. this is a great topic
i have made numerous posts to people who mistake this forum for reality

making real life decisions based on the actions of people on an internet forum is lunacy. "i have decided to stay home in november because xxx supporters are so rude". aright chief, good luck with that.

Ya know, people who are so enshrined in their little bubble that they no longer can perceive the reality around them, but only instead the small immediate reality they've created for themselves. Bubblers.

On edit: If ya need a 'DU' derivative type name though, just call them DUlts lol.
