Cindy McCain: Proud of Abu Ghraib? Gitmo? Katrina response? Homeless vets?
I saw that Barack Obama is trying to "explain" what his wife meant with her remarks suggesting that in recent years she has not been proud of America.

Barack is trying to pretend that Michelle was only talking about American politics. I don't buy it.

I think it would be better for Barack to say that there are good reasons why patriotic Americans have not been feeling proud of their country during recent years.

You can see Cindy McCain's original comment here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROcgaVyzujM

What do folks here think? Do you understand and agree with what Michelle said?

1. Alas - the Obamas will get one short sound bit to "exlain"
Long winded explanations will go nowhere with the republicon homelander corporate media.

The repubs have been tossed raw meat.

It will not matter what the explanations are. Sadly.

4. Here's how to walk it back...
Mrs Obama can explain that, since she's found out that since Republican politicians can excuse illegal and immoral activities occurring fairly late in life as 'youthful indiscretions,' then the phrase "for the first time in my adult life" only covers events since she turned 40.

3. I got what she meant. She was using hyperbole that's easy to twist, but I got it.
That said, she needs to realize she's in the PR business now. It's part of her job to not throw quotes out into the public arena that can be used to slap her party's candidate around.

This one she'll ride out, if she's smart and finds a way to "walk it back." But I think we're about to see the "Hillarification" of Michelle Obama--the GOP's 24 hours smear machine is just now getting warmed up.

5. Instead of explaining her actions...
The Obama camp should just attack McCain's wife for the junkie/theif she is.

8. She made a bad mistake...
Very proud of America. Not perfect.

But, without America the world would be plunged into COMPLETE CHAOS. American is the ONLY thing that keeps some sense of sanity in the world.

10. I'll say it - there really isn't much to be proud of being an American these days
The OP listed just a few reasons why it's hard to be proud of being an American these days. I've never really gotten into this macho nationalistic bullshit. The notion that as Americans, we are superior to other nationalities is absurd, but I continually hear people proclaim that we live in the "best country in the world". When I look around this country, I see unbridled corporate greed that propagates a "survival of the fittest" mentality, a system that is designed to help the rich and screw the poor. I see a country that was built on the back of racism and slavery, where minorities are still struggling to find their place, and a system that is intent on trying to keep them down.

I feel that nationalism is an outdated concept. The sooner that we begin looking upon ourselves as a global community, helping one another out - as opposed to looking out for our own selfish national interests - the better off we'll ALL be.

12. I agree
If the McCains really think being patriotic means believing that America is always right and always "number 1"`, then it becomes pretty much the same thing as nationalism. If history teaches us anything, it is that nationalism leads to war, suffering and human misery.
