Why McCain VP rumors are GOOD
Edited on Wed Mar-17-04 11:38 AM by tameszu
1) Because it's not going to happen anyway--his staff has straight out denied it, and, KERRY HASN'T EVEN MENTIONED HE'S CONSIDERING IT.

AND, much more importantly,

2) IT MAKES BUSH AND THE REPUBLICANS LOOK BAD.

McCain is Bush's ARIZONA CAMPAIGN CHAIR, for goodness sake. For him to be sincerely praising Kerry instead of attacking him, and musing about his willingness to take Kerry's VP slot, if hypothetical offered it, is a HUGE DISS to Bush and the Republican Party. Consider how pissed off we get whenever Zell opens his mouth. McCain's willingness to entertain VP piss off Repubs like 135262364 more, because it's less expected than Miller's backstabbing.

Note, also, that most Repubs do not agonize about what Miller's endorsement of Bush means for THEIR party--instead, they trot him out on every Faux show to demonstrate the "decay" of the Dem Party. If we are going to win, then we are going to need to show more tactical sense. Instead of worrying ourselves about what McCain's musings say about our party and playing defense, we need to use this as the gift it is and PLAY OFFENSE: we should emphasize what this says about BUSH AND REPUBLICAN PARTY that the best guy he could find to lead his campaign effort Arizona SEEMS TO PREFER BUSH'S OPPONENT OVER BUSH.

OK, that's all for now...

1. Yeah...I think it works in our favor
The important thing is McCain has said very clearly that he thinks John Kerry is a great guy and would make a great President.

McCain is far more influential with the "middle of the road" people than that bozo Miller.

2. Excellent Points, Sir
These rumors open a path for persons of center, and even center-right attitudes, to consider seriously voting for Sen. Kerry for President....

6. Some 'Ifs' There, Mr. Taylor
There is some question among Republicans whether Sen. McCain will do derious campaigning for the criminals of the '00 Coup: his position in the Arizona campaign is simply owing to his seniority and fame in office; it is not an operational one. Novak, who can be taken seriously in comment on matters within the reactionary camp, considers the gap unbridgeable, owing to Sen. McCain's continued outrage over primary attacks against him in South Carolina.

This thing will open some peoples' minds now: some of these will then find other reasons, and continue on a new course, that later developments will not change. Nor is it a question of Sen. Kerry wanting Sen. McCain; this thing is a media mole-hill, that Sen. McCain declined to squash immediately.

4. I don't think anybody here is taking issue with the RUMORS...
What we ARE taking issue with is the number of deluded DUers who actually believe that McCain as either VP or in a prominent cabinet slot would actually be a GOOD IDEA!

5. It won't have an affect...
If it keeps up, and somehow they tie it to Kerry, as though he wants this, it makes him look desperate -- like Lieberman. We all know how much Joe-mentum he got out of that (ok, months later and I still can't get over that word).

7. What I do not Like about McCain as VP
The only problem I have with the rumors of McCain as VP is that we keep backing away from our positions in order to do what we think will allow us to win. I think that is the reason we are in the position we are in now. For some time now Democrats have been willing to give up some of their beliefs in order to win. We must begin to become proud of ourselfs again and stand up for the things we believe in. No Republican would be proud to have Zell Miller mentioned as the Republican VP. It is great to have McCain speak well of Kerry, but we must stand up for things and get candidates that stand up for things. There is even talk of McCain being the Defense Secretary under Kerry. Why are we not promoting people who have our own views. People who do not want to send America's sons and daughters to wars for no reason. People who care about the little guy over the big guy. At times McCain seems like that person and I actually like and respect McCain, but his views are mainly totally different from that of Democrats. So, why should it even be rumored that he might be VP. There are enough good Democrats that believe in the things we believe in that we need not consider Republicans for positions in Democratic cabinets. Republicans would not do that and neither should we.

8. I agree. The McCain defection talk is a good thing
I wish Kerry would give some hints and blow some kisses to further stew the pot.
