an idea: McCain for S o D
Last night my roommate & I were watching the Daily Show & talking politics and we hit upon this idea.

There've been rumors of Kerry tapping McCain for his VP. McCain even fed them a little, but then he denied it. Whatever the rumors are, it seems to me highly, highly unlikely that either Kerry or McCain would cross party lines for this, most partisan of all time, election.

But then we thought, what about cabinet appointments? Here it's not unusual for a Dem pres to pick a Republican or vice versa. And remember how Junior made sure everyone knew he was going to pick Powell for S o S, as if that somehow "made up for" his pathetic inability to remember the names of world leaders.

Anyways, what if the Kerry campaign floated the rumor that, if elected, he would ask John McCain to be his secretary of defense? (McCain wouldn't even necessarily have to endorse them.) I think a lot of centrists, even people on the left, have a lot of respect for Senator McCain, for they (rightly, IMHO) see him as not beholden to the neocon busheviks. It might sway their vote in a tight election.

Also, wouldn't it be great to see McCain in charge of Pentagon? Talk about having some scores to settle!

What do you think?

1. I would support McCain in some cabinet position.
Defense could be good. So would Transportation. I have a very high level of respect for McCain and he can't do much ill for me.

2. McCain's a hyperhawk
I believe that McCain is more principled than the Bushies. However, I also think that he's extremely pro-military-action and would not be suitable for Defense Sec'y.

3. Enough of this blather about McCain
Whatever principles he had he sacrificed on the neocon altar. He is a tool of the corrupt administration and any talk of him in a Democratic administration is absurd.

6. Agreed!
I also can't believe how so many people entertain the mere thought of John McCain becoming a part of a Kerry administration.

McCain is a REPUBLICAN.

He, his wife and his kids were treated like scum by the Bushies during the 2000 repub primaries and still the guy defends those worms.

4. We got screwed when Clinton
put a Rethug in that slot. This former hero has laid down and taken such a screwing by his party led by B***co that I have no respect for him as a person.

5. Lieberman beat you to this idea...
He stated that he would want McCain as his SoD while his campaign was still up and running.

Personally, I think such a move would be a disaster. McCain's a hyper-hawk, a warmonger to the nth degree.

7. McCain is a Republican
These efforts to include him in a Democratic administration are misguided.

It makes the Democratic Party look weak if we need to cross the aisle to find a qualified candidate to fill a key position.

McCain supports Bush. McCain will defend Bush through the intelligence failure committee.

How about we let John McCain's career evolve without assistance from the Democratic Party. You want us to help put SoD on his resume so he can use it against a future Democratic candidate for the White House?

If John McCain supports the principles and ideas of the Democratic Party he can change parties. Until then, he is the opposition and has no place in our administration.
