Obama's rhetoric recycling - Adam Reilly

What's really remarkable about the ongoing Barack Obama "plagiarism" scandal is this: Obama's campaign had ample reason to think his channeling of Deval Patrick would be an issue--and they kept doing it anyway.

Let's recap. The New York Times Magazine discussed the rhetorical resemblance between Obama and Patrick in April 2007. The Boston Globe picked up the subject a couple weeks later--starting with an example that anticipates, to an eerie degree, what just got Obama into trouble. (Prescient stuff, Scott Helman!)

Then, last month, the Globe broached the subject again. So did the Associated Press (I'm still looking for the link.) And after itemizing seven specific Obama-Patrick parallels, I warned that this striking resemblance could erode the electorate's faith in Obama's authenticity.

But Obama kept right on going--either because he didn't think this issue would blow up, or because he literally couldn't stop.

Which brings us to the question of just how important political consultant David Axelrod is. Because both Patrick and Obama are Axelrod clients,

1. Enjoy it while you can
After the polls close today this non-issue gets pushed off the headlines.

2. This issue won't go away because it exposes Obama for what he is, a media creation

5. Actually, this "issue" will not survive past today, as it was ginned up by the Clinton campaign and
it says more about the desperation in the Clinton campaign than it does about Obama.

7. However desperate the Obama movement is to cover this up, it won't go away.
It speaks volumes about how inauthentic and canned the Obama candidacy really is. It's not "New Politics", it's "New Coke" all over again.

10. You contradict yourself by calling it "the Obama movement". Freudian slip?
Kind of hard to gin up a "movement" if it is "inauthentic" and "canned", dontcha think?

3. So let's say, for argument's sake, that he did plagiarize these words.....does it matter?
We have sooooooo much more to get done in this country than demanding to know who said what first and who failed to credit whom. IMHO. If only, IF ONLY, B*sh was guilty ONLY of plagiarizing somebody else's speech..........

9. I'd rather be making comparasins between mcLame's and bush speeches.
Because rhetorical resemblance is hard to avoid when the issues concern public policy - politics.

HRC taking a page from Edwards playbook/Obama's rhetoric... Obama using a page from Deval's speeches... blah blah blah. What a bunch of poop. We have 2 fine candidates who are behaving like little snots right now. They need to beat up on mcLame not one another.

Personally, I don't give a damn that the media noticed a rhetorical resemblance between Obama and Deval... they sure as hell played deaf and dumb when beating the drums of war for *bush. They lie and cover up as much as *bush's corrupt administration - so here's what I think of the media noting anything about our candidates: <----- FLUSH those dirtbags.

Maybe msm should focus on the gop's satanic cult attempt at bringing the dead raygun to life. That's the kind of recycling america doesn't need.

14. Here's what Deval Patrick's all about, Cadillac and expensive furnishings
Patrick to repay taxpayers for decor
$10,000 spent for drapes; governor to offset car costs

By Frank Phillips and Andrea Estes, Globe Staff | February 21, 2007
Governor Deval Patrick spent more than $10,000 on damask drapes for his State House office as part of a $27,387 makeover that also included a new desk, settee, and other furnishings paid for with taxpayer money.

Yesterday, after an inquiry from the Globe, Patrick abruptly announced that he would repay the state for the draperies and furnishings.
At the same time, Patrick said he would contribute $543 each month to the lease of the Cadillac DTS he uses for state business, bringing the cost to the public in line with the more modest Ford Crown Victoria used by Governor Mitt Romney.
Patrick, who just days ago defiantly defended his lease of the $46,000 luxury car, said he changed his mind after a weekend spent struggling with the state's dismal finances and the budget cuts he has asked his agency leaders to make to bridge a deficit of at least $1 billion.
