Who do you think GWB will choose for VP?
I've read discussion about it on conservative sites. I heard it mentioned as I left the polls yesterday. I'd like to know what folks here think about the possibility of Bush dumping Cheney and choosing another running mate for this year's race.

The pros: Bush distances himself from Halliburton's burgeoning scandals, finds a candidate who'll appeal to undecided moderates, and/or brings in new blood to groom for 2008.

The cons: Bush undermines his own "steady leadership" position, alienates his wealthiest voter base, and/or doesn't find a candidate who can successfully bridge his gaps.

Names currently in play (please spare your monitor and put down your coffee or Coke before reading): Condoleeza Rice, Rudy Guliani.

So whaddaya think? Possible? Unlikely? Would the GOP consider it, and if they did it, what do you think would happen?

3. Please don't be Freeper-like
watch grammar: They are not or They're not
Cheney may be dropped because of Health.
Their is the possessive (their car is red and not they are a car) and not anywhere near a pronoun.

2. They WON'T because they CAN'T. They CAN'T because he's IN CHARGE.
There is nobody who can tell Cheney what to do.

MYTH: Cheney can run things "just as easily" from outside the White House.

FACT: As a private citizen Cheney is vulnerable to all kinds of lawsuits, subpoenas and criminal prosecution.

MYTH: Cheney "grudgingly" agreed to serve; he's not really interested.

FACT: Cheney was put in charge of a commission to find the running mate for the chimp; he presented the commision's recommendation: himself. He sidestepped the vetting process in this way. Once in power, "his personality changed" and people who knew him said it was scary what he started acting like.

MYTH: Cheney, if asked to step down, would willingly comply.

FACT: (Okay, speculation) Cheney has said to Bush, "Take me off the ticket and in two weeks maximum you will be facing impeachment charges as well as the charge of treason for everything you've done that I have the goods on. And the same thing if I turn up floating dead in the Potomac."

6. Cheney is not singlehandedly in charge
To demonize Cheney as Bush's puppeteer is to overlook the structure that put him in power.

However poorly spoken, Bush is a cagey, canny man who has backstabbed his past business partners and never suffered for it. His entire life experience has taught him he can say one thing, do another, and get away with it. There's no reason for him to think he couldn't do it again.

5. Yes there is. It's wishful thinking driving people to say that it can't
happen. There is a very strong chance of it. They will do anything to win, and only a doofus can see that either Rice or Giuliani wouldn't be a huge boost for the GOP.

It would be equivolent to the Yankees signing A-Rod. Rove knows that the religious right isn't going to stay home and let the more liberal senator from Massachusetts get elected because who the powerless vp is. The sad fact is that the GOP is more unified than they have been since Reagan for the most part. And they are unified under Bush, not the vp.
