CNN "Some voters say sexism less offensive than racism"
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 04:27 PM by blueraven95
I didn't see that this was already posted, and I searched, so I'm sorry if it's a dupe. It's an interesting article, worth a full read.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- The simple fact that either Hillary Clinton, a white woman, or Barack Obama, a black man, will likely be the Democratic nominee for president is fueling a nationwide debate about how sexism and racism may shape this campaign.

At a tea party with members of Columbus, Ohio's Junior League we posed the question: Is overt sexism more acceptable than overt racism?

Voter Babette Feibel told us, "Sexism of the nature Hillary Clinton is experiencing has been around as kind of an acceptable joke for years. As far as racism, it's definitely not politically correct or acceptable."

Hillary Clinton has had to deal with plenty. At a rally, hecklers yelled to her to iron their shirts. Radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners, "Will this country want to actually watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis?"

On edit: fixed annoying typo in subject line.

2. It is definitely more acceptable -- even on here
It's institutionalized in our language, our advertising, everything.

And, attempts to do something about it are attacked -- always. Even on here. Good God, look at the "irrelevant feminism" thread, or attacks against Steinem and Jong. And the use of sexist language like "shrill," "bitch," etc. Many attempt to call people on this are met with cries of,"Any criticism of Hillary is sexist to you!" No, only sexist attacks are. Even the old RW spectre of Hillary's Lesbianism has been brought up, or cries of refusing to vote for her because she didn't divorce a wandering husband. Oh boy.

12. There's no sexist male equivalent for bitch
asshole is usually used for men, but it doesn't have the same anti-man connotation that bitch has. Someone needs to invent a word for that use.

18. It takes balls to say that! That's meant as a compliment, honest!
No one ever says "that's awfully white of you" as a compliment to blacks anymore - that's a GOOD thing.

15. The 'news' loves to cite two or three people as if they represent thousands or millions
That's what 'some people say' means and does.

And it just isn't true most of the time. When used it not only shows lazy journalism but biased journalism as well. Both are highly dangerous.

13. I dont think a Progressive should say that either is more acceptable.
Bigotry is unacceptable and both sexism and racism are bigotry. But there are jackasses who (unfortunately) think that one is somehow better than the other. I dont agree with the jackasses at all. I was just pointing out that they exist.

16. CNN " Some Voters Think Stupid Shit."
Reminds me of some other CNN articles like:

"Stupid Person Says Something Stupid."

"Stupid Person Does Something Stupid."

"Stupid Person Thinks Someone Else is Stupid."

"Some Stupid People Like the Same Things That You Like, Thus, Perhaps, Making You a Stupid Person. "
