Sen. Clinton - "Just stand there and look pretty!" to John Edwards on Senate Floor
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 02:12 PM by themartyred
Kudos to Democrattotheend for remembering reading it, and 1776Forever for starting the search.

I went, of course, to the waybackmachine.org (archive.org) and found the original page -

"Such earnest cultivation pays off. When she wanted prime time—and lots of it—to explain in a lengthy floor speech why she was backing Bush on Iraq, Clinton asked Byrd to give her a chunk of his time. He happily agreed. When the hard-charging and Hollywood-handsome Sen. John Edwards rushed to the floor at the last minute and asked to speak, Democratic leaders had no time left to give him. Clinton couldn’t restrain a triumphant grin at the plight of a clear rival—in fact, one who is seeking the 2004 nomination. She spoke to him in a near shout—loud enough for the galleries to hear. “Just stand there and look pretty, John,” she said. He smiled wanly, and rushed from the chamber."

If it doesn't link for you, go to http://www.waybackmachine.org and enter the link http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3067972/ and click on the July 2004 link. And, yes, since this did occur, I would certainly NOT forget someone saying that to me in the Senate - how RUDE and sexist of her. Jealousy over looks shows incredible childishness, he cannot help it he was a handsome 50 year old at the time. She really shocked me that she would say this loudly, and in the Senate during session, to rub in the fact she got a lot of face time about the war issue.

Isn't that such a PRETTY ensemble she's had put together for her?

4. There is NOTHING condescending about that comment.
I'm sure that Senator Clinton wouldn't have taken any offense if George W Bush or John McCain told her to "Stand there and look pretty". She is a woman of grace and class who would take it for the complement that it is.

6. you don't understand how insulting that is
to a woman. Lots of history to it. Not too funny at all.

Why Clinton would switch it around and think it cute or amusing, when she bloody well knows how loaded with sexist crap that statement is, is really confounding if she is a feminist.

Based on the question that was asked about the cache of minorities running it was a smarmy joke. This Clinton comment is really much more rude, IMO.

I can imagine if I told a co-worker that she didn't need to do anything but stand there and look pretty that I'd get punched. Yikes.

I don't know if the Clinton comment is true, but if it is, it's not very nice.

Every time my head starts to hurt in this forum, it's members like you that make me realize it's not all venom and anger.

I wish we could choose our Democratic nominee based on the grace of the candidates' supporters. John Edwards would be winning in a landslide now.

I've seen this phenomenon on other Internet forums, too, not just here.

He doesn't have to say anything publicly ever about it, nor should he. It's for others to discuss and defend him about. I would tell her privately to not behave like a school girl trying to embarrass me because she thinks I'm cute, though.

50. You HRC Supporters - You don't get it do you - She WAS FOR THE WAR! & she talked down to John!
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 04:19 PM by 1776Forever
READ THIS:

"Such earnest cultivation pays off. When she wanted prime time—and lots of it—to explain in a lengthy floor speech why she was backing Bush on Iraq!"

She has said that she hadn't understood the Iraq Bill - she thought it was only to allow the U.N. to talk it over. Now we learn that she stood up and talked "in a lengthy floor speech why she was backing Bush on Iraq!". Hello - are you HRC supporters just going to look over this! She knew exactly what she was doing! AND if she didn't she doesn't deserve to be our next President!

AND what she said to John was very sarcastic and was meant to put him in his "place". You honestly can say that her saying "John just stand there and look pretty" is not demeaning to John Edwards!!!!! BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://clinton.senate.gov/speeches/iraq_101002.html

"So Mr. President, for all its appeal, a unilateral attack, while it cannot be ruled out, on the present facts is not a good option."

I still think what she said to John was an insult.

I searched and found someone else mentioning it on a blog, but could not find a source.

Wonder if Edwards remembers this incident as he weighs an endorsement? Not saying it's the be-all-to-end-all, but sounds like she was pretty rude to him that day.
