Voting in southwestern Virginia
I vote at a small country church in a rural, farming area of southwestern Virginia.

When I got to the polling place there were 4 people in front of me....3 elderly women and 1 elderly man. All voted in the Democratic primary. Behind me were 4 elderly women and 1 elderly man....all 4 women voted in the Democratic primary. So, out of 10 voters 9 voted in the Democratic primary.

I was really surprised....this is republican country.

1. Open primaries in VA, though
Which I don't like. But, maybe I'm just being cynical!

That IS Red Country. I was in Ultra Blue Country when I lived in VA.

6. You're optimistic because Republicans are gaming the system?
I take small comfort in knowing that when the GE rolls around, they go back to the comfort of their own party.

Open primaries help Republicans, not Democrats, because Republicans don't mind cheating.

8. Demarcate?

I know what the word means, but I don't get the context you're using it in.

What did you mean?

24. 's alright -- you should see MY typos!
I use the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard">Dvorak keyboard. It's a lot faster and easier on my hands, but since all the common letters are grouped together, the typos are usually actual words, too. But in the context of the sentence, they lead to wild and occasionally embarrassing results!

4. I'm not sure if these were cross overs
or what. I just thought it was very odd. I usually have to look under rocks to find other Democrats.

16. I'm not sure where Marion is....
I'm in Bedford County between Roanoke and Lynchburg at the foot of the Peaks of Otter right off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

10. Gate City, Abingdon, Big Stone Gap, Richland, Norton, Dungannon, Lebanon, Grundy ....?
Virginia is my home state. Just rattling off the few places there that come to mind :)

I almost moved to Grundy a couple years ago, but then I realized how red they were. Southwest Virginia is gorgeous. I loved the drive from Gate City to Rose Hill.

You're living in one of the prettiest areas of the country.

15. I always forget whether it's Richland or Richlands :)
I loved getting work assignments there, such a pretty drive, such pretty country.

I don't want to get too much off topic here, but do you remember a psychic who lived there by the name of Daisy? She was really something special. Broke my heart when she died. She was such a gentle soul. I still think of her to this day.

18. No, can't say as I do.
It's been 16 years since I lived in that part of the country, though.

21. I met Daisy probably 26, 27 years ago, perhaps.
Maybe your kinfolk might know of her, if they're from those parts.

I'll have to remember to pronounce it RichLANDS :)

RICHlands. (If you didn't know.) :D

17. Bedford County....
between Roanoke and Lynchburg. I love where I live. We're only minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway and I love to go up there in nice weather...drop the top on my convertible and cruise listening to Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon. :-)

I can see the Peaks of Otter from my house.

I lived in Richlands for a short period of time many years ago.

20. I only drove the Blue Ridge Parkway once.
It was stunning. Mostly I lived in the area closer to the border with east Tennessee, and for a while lived in Kingsport, Church Hill.

One reason I moved to Oregon is because it has much of the same gorgeous scenery as Virginia. Mountains are higher, though. I can see the Blue Mountains from my house. I moved to Texas for a while (Houston, Arlington), felt like I was going to die if I didn't get close to the mountains again :)

22. I've never been to Oregon but have heard it's beautiful....
I can't breathe if I can't see a mountain. ;-)

I have been blessed to live in two of what I consider the most beautiful places in the country.....the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the foot of the Catalina Mountains in AZ.

I'm glad you are back close to your mountains. When I lived in FL I hated not having mountains. Sharon McCrumb, the author said living close to mountains is a secure feeling...like they are watching over you. Sort of silly maybe but it's how I feel, too.

12. I used to live in a little town called Honaker
in Southwest Virginia. Rick Boucher, a Democrat is still the Representative of that area. There's a pretty good Democratic base down there with the Coal Mining Unions. Sounds like the fundies message there about moral values is finally being given the short shrift it deserves.

Looks like people are voting their pocketbooks, again. Good for them.
