Women 'falling for Obama'
Women 'falling for Obama'
12/02/2008 12:02 - (SA)

College Park, Maryland - You can see it in their flushed-face smiles and hear it in their screams. They say the phenomenon is difficult to describe, but once they experience it they tell their friends, sisters, mothers and daughters, and they come back for more if they can.

"He's very charismatic. It was a 'you-had-to-be-there' kind of experience," said Lolita Breckenridge, 37, after hearing Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama address a packed rally at the University of Maryland on Monday.

A dedicated supporter, she brought two of her friends to hear the Illinois senator deliver one of his much-talked-about speeches.

"Not too much of the speech was new to me," she admitted. "But hearing him live..." she trailed off, shaking her head and grinning.

When Obama addressed the crowd of 16 000 on the eve of primaries which he is tipped to win in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, he carried himself with his habitual worldly confidence, interspersed talk of foreign policy with recollections of his childhood and even poked political fun at his Republican adversaries.

He did not flinch when women screamed as he was in mid-sentence, and even broke off once to answer a female's cry of "I love you Obama!" with a reassuring: "I love you back."

Last go-round we had a President folks wanted to have a beer with, now we got one that folks want to fuck.
I guess we haven't learned any lessons here.:eyes:

I'm sure a lot of people in politics are considered attractive. I always thought Gore was a handsome man. Still do. But I didn't fantazise about him or weep at his speeches. The behavior on the part of SOME of Obama's supporters is bizarre and creepy.

9. I'm not sure fucking is the point.
I think it's more towards intimacy. Admittedly, Hillary is not a personality type you want to cozy up to, at least in her public persona.
I think we're in for some difficult times as a nation and the opposite of "Yes, we can" is "No, we can't". The ability to inspire and empathize isn't everything but FDR wouldn't have accomplished much without those qualities.

10. Perspective -- this is NOTHING compared to the reaction RFK inspired
People here who talk about things like "cult" (the new c-word) plainly lack a sense of history. In 1968, RFK was like the kind of rock star of the 60s (eg Beatles) that had masses of people screaming and LITERALLY, in one celebrated instance, stealing the shoes off his feet. His campaign (which was electorally unstoppable had the 'family thing' not been done to him) was nothing short of a craze.

It is a little like the ENORMOUS protestation that was raised in the wake of a slightly pinker than medium "red meat" speech by Howard Dean that was touted over the internet, in this age of cool detachment, as his "scream". If you thought that was outre, you should have heard speeches by Ted Kennedy and Mario Cuomo to the Democratic Convention in 1984 (I was there -- in SF). They filled the huge auditorium with their enormous voices. Dean and Obama are merely mild echoes of mainstream politics past, for those with a sense of history.

.... a slut by a lot of people, and she'd LOSE based on that - she'd not be taken seriously.

Funny a male candidate/pres can be considered a turn-on and that's OK and he's still taken seriously - but if a female one was - well it'd be a totally different story due to our double standards re: such things.

Now she was a sexy Presidential candidate. I think Sarkozy married Bruni just to try to get some sex appeal into the French government. And the PM of Ukraine is quite attractive too. I think in general we don't have very attractive politicians, male or female -- as we used to say on Capitol hill, DC is Hollywood for ugly people.

46. LOL
Women falling for a candidate has happened for as long as I can remember. My reason for liking Kennedy as a child was because he was cute. I was only in 2nd grade so I think I can be forgiven.

As an adult I wish people would vote on the issues but in 2000 one of the biggest factors seemed to be that people wanted to have a beer with Bush-thank you MSM:puke: I have cut down watching the pundits but I really don't recall any real discussion of the issues-maybe a few but most of it has been about how likable a candidate is. Not everyone voting is a political junkie but I wonder how many John or Jane Doe citizens can talk about any issues with the exception of bloggers.

Your post reminds me of 1980. I was car pooling and one of the riders commented she was voting for ray gun. The rest of us were horrified but I managed to ask her why. I was expecting to hear hostage, energy or something. What I heard was that ray gun could manage "those" people. There was a collective huh and she said she was referring to movie stars (her words-not mine). Falling for a candidate at least makes a minute more sense.

Because I remember my mom, grandma and aunts always talking about how "sexy" they found him prior to the 1992 election. Hell, my aunt even had one of those lifesize cardboard cutouts of Clinton.

And what about the love women had for JFK? That was kinda cultish, too, I guess, eh?

Maybe we're just way past due for a new band similar to The Beatles?

BO does nothing for me...rather plastic, shallow, and vague.

I had no idea that citizens could be so easily manipulated...don't you get the feeling that BO is laughing has ass off at how easy it is to fool people?

58. My mom shook JFK's hand and didn't wash it for a week.
She thought he was gorgeous - she didn't necessarily want to "fuck" him. The fact that Obama is not difficult on the eyes is not a bad thing. It had nothing to do with my voting for him, but I will say, he's a hell of a lot easier to watch and/or listen to than most candidates.

Finding a candidate attractive DOESN'T mean that's why you're voting for them - in fact, it's a ridiculous assumption, and an insult to most of the women who support Obama.

75. I had a dream about Hillary once -
but it was nothing like the dream I had about Jodie Foster, Rachel Maddow and Cate Blanchett, in fact it was more of a nightmare. In fact it was a nightmare.

Problem is, you can be voted off that show when people get tired of you.

He better hope the swooning will last another 9 months.
