1. Just the fact that there's that much insecurity about voting for a 72-year-old...
...McCain's going down.

How about a... 72 year old gay atheist who has been married three times in Canada, who also happens to be a Mormon black woman with Jewish ancestry?

:P

4. Atheists are at the bottom of the pile
Even though nobody ever bombed anything in the name of No-God.

Of course as a Gaytheist I'm doubly screwed. :-(

Yay for religious bigotry! :sarcasm:

7. Same here.
Although, frankly, I think it's B.S. Those numbers wouldn't hold if an actual candidate were in place. They'd either drop (if the candidate was good) or they'd go up (if the candidate was bad). I also think the number who said they wouldn't vote for a woman is off because some of those people likely associated it directly with Hillary.

However, over all I actually think it is a net positive that almost 50% of the country are open minded enough to consider voting for a gay President. It makes you wonder. They'll let us be President but won't let us get married? :eyes:

12. Strictly enforcing the "No religious test" would be a start
Keeping religious talk and questions out of campaigns would help as well. If candidates couldn't spend so much time trying to out-Christian one another (and nobody could press them about their "faith") it wouldn't be such an issue. Campaigns should be about politics and what they're going to do for the people, not about preaching.

11. I would vote for an atheist but
I wouldn't like him repeating over and over again that he doesn't believe in God. It's good to tell children that there is a God and a devil. It makes them behave good and fear the consequences of acting bad.

effective parenting tools, so he/she uses religion as a clutch.

Thats all religion is, really.

22. I completely disagree. Children should not be lied to and told that
there is a god - why scare them for no good reason? Tell the truth (there are no gods) - the truth shall set you free.

23. How about just teaching children to be good and respectful?
Treat others as you would like to be treated, without telling them about the fires of hell.

I think somebody made a right turn somewhere.

24. Children raised by the "religiously insane"
never seem to be able to get rid of that guilt, etc. They are scared for life. I have a relative who did a terrible thing to her children by belonging to a cult like religious group. Her son is worried about his daughters not finding mates. If you belong to a cult like minority religious group who is going to marry you from outside that group?

Many minority religious groups in our society have a right to exist but are they not destroying their children's future and mental health? I worry about them.

17. I'd like an atheist for President
since I'm sick of the various "choice religious groups" getting my tax dollars. I want my Constitutional rights defended against religious tyranny. Government supported religion usually turns pretty ugly in the end. Like Bush's Judo-Christian Wars. No one should be asked to die for a religious group.

18. Why would anyone want to vote for a candidate
who didn't believe in a god? I mean, to come to that conclusion, they would have to value reason and rational thought over faith. Why on earth would anyone even believe someone whose governing philosophy was reason?

It is just of interest from history when talking about atheists and their morals, etc.
