Poll question: Has anyone else (slightly) lost interest in the race?
I don't know... I just feel as though I'm not a part of the process anymore. I do not think it's sour grapes, I'm happy for Sen. John Kerry and I definately want Bush gone in November. But I wonder if others feel the way I do--as I'm reading reports of record low turnout in the Dem primaries this year.

1. A little
But I like coming to DU more than I did during the race because the candidate partisans have left.

2. Why have you lost interest?
Has the race changed from a Presidential election to "American Idol"?

It's the same race, and it's the same stakes involved.

4. I haven't lost complete interest
It's just that I'm not very motivated to learn more about Kerry and defend his record to nonbelievers, etc. etc. Maybe it's just that I'm too busy right now and my interest will peak again when I have more free time.

9. I feel the same way. I feel that I lose credibility by defending him.
He doesn't stand firm enough for me to even explain what he stands for. "He's better than Bush" is about the only thing I can say with confidence.

18. That's certainly understandable
You've expended a lot of energy so far, and you've had some disappointment. That can knock the steam out of anybody. Bit I wouldn't worry. Over the next few months, you're going to hear more and learn more (if only by osmosis) about Kerry, and maybe then you can feel more credible speaking on the subject. You shouldn't have to feel that you're campaigning 24/7. Take a break. Relax and enjoy the show, if you can.

24. Hopefully Kerry will do more to win our hearts in addition to our
votes. His latest comments about Bush and his lying thugs are definately a step in the right direction.

3. no I haven't lost interest
There were record low turn-outs in Louisiana because the presidential primary was a done deal and in most precincts there weren't any other races of great significance. Kerry is just starting to get his message out in this area, and already some excitement is created by the rumors (and they are only that, rumors) that he was considering Mary Landrieu for VP. The rumor was even published in yesterday's New Orleans Times-Picayune, which is a pretty right-wing hate sheet, so you have to read everything betweeen the lines. I think the more people learn about him, the more excited they will get. Just give it a little time.

6. Not in the presidential race
But I did in the primary race after Dean lost steam but now the real race has begun and I'm only kinda excited still. I need Kerry to really excite me and right now it's just not happening. But then I think of what's at stake and I get really pissed and I want to beat Shrub so badly.

8. I'm glad that Kerry is standing up to Bush
I kind of wish he'd do so more forcefully though. Not in mean spirited way, but in a way that was pleasant-yet forceful enough to get him a lot of media coverage. If that makes sense. haha

10. I haven't loss interest in the Bush vs Kerry race, no.
Edited on Wed Mar-10-04 06:28 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
It's definately the most important as well as most interesting thing on the political landscape right now.

PS. for good poll results, there should always be an equal number of postive and negative responses.

for instance, since you have 'Yes' and 'Sort of' (two degrees of positive), in addition to 'No', you should have 'Not really' (two degrees of negative)

13. Voter turnout
Has only been low in the south. In the Northeast and Midwest it was very high, so high in fact that in many race of the primaries and caucuses, they ran out of ballots. In Iowa adn New Hampshire record turnouts were recorded.

Yesterday in Florida, while turnout was reported as light, it still was twice as high as projected, with the black community coming out in record number. In my county, one in which 37,000 ballots from 2000 were supposedly thrown out as being ineleigible (mainly in black communities) Black voters came out in record numbers yesterday to vote for Kerry. In this county Kerry won the primary by the largest margin, drawing 78 percent of the votes in the primary. In one of the most heavily republican counties in the state.

out of Al Gore's house. I won't be whole until he is dealt with.

15. I think this story is a crock
For one thing, the NYTimes quotes a source that has a bunch of dead links at its website:

http://www.gspm.org/csae/

For another thing, the "study" ignores a bunch of the elections held so far, for one reason or another. So it found one state with a low turnout? So what?

For another thing, turnouts were more than TEN TIMES what they were just two years ago, and record-setting all across Minnesota.

This is just the Republican bought-and-paid-for media trying to stick a pin the the balloon of groundswell Democratic turnout this season.

So this is a bunch of crap, in my opinion.

16. Of course they are trying to downplay dem gains in this election. The
republican party and their media henchmen think that they can beat us down with this crap about low voter turnout, etc. What they don't understand that to some of us, the future of our nation is at stake. That's what keeps me interested, I worry about the future of my children and grandchildren. I know that with four more years of this dumb bastard and his inbred crew running things, there won't be anything left for them. Nothing. I live for the day that they are out on their asses.

No, obviously I haven't lost interest. It's a focal point in my life. These assholes did something that has never been done in the history MY country, they stole an election, and I willl never, ever, ever forget it. They have perverted the justice system, invaded my privacy, and are trying to take away my civil rights.

Jeez.

20. I agre with you
The NY Times story was a real piece of crap. They try to refute the idea that Dems are excited by pointing out that turnout was higher in 1960!! Four decades ago!

Meanwhile, the chart on turnout that they published with the article clearly shows Dem turnout going up significantly

17. More passionate with every day that passes
that the vacant, amoral puppet and his EVIL handlers have to go. I hope every soul in this country who stands for anything other than greed and power for the wealthy is out for Kerry. Not because Kerry is perfect. He is far from it. But to send a message that there are excesses of greed and tyranny that even the generally politically naive citizens of the US cannot tolerate.

22. The burning question of who will implement the status quo does have

somewhat limited enchantment. It is mildly amusing to watch the Deltas' attempt to morph into Rhos in order to tantalize the dwindling market share that both must fight over.

25. Not in the least
The primaries don't exist as a race any longer and haven't since Super Tuesday. I'm riveted by the presidential race, though. Getting rid of this administration is vital to many of us, but aside from that, Kerry is the first presidential nominee in decades that I really feel enthusiastic about and the dynamics that are in play right now are exciting and prove they haven't learned much since Clinton's impeachment. They cut us and THEY bleed. I'm taking it one day at a time and enjoying each little victory.
