Hillary to Shuster: "I am a mom first, candidate second" "incredibly offensive" "pattern at MSNBC"
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/02/hillary-respond.html

In Orono, Maine, this morning, following a rally at the University of Maine, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., made her first public remarks about MSNBC's David Shuster having referred to her campaign having "pimped out Chelsea," Clinton's daughter.

"I am a mom first and a candidate second," Clinton told reporters, per ABC News' Eloise Harper. "I found the remarks incredibly offensive. I can take whatever comes my way, that’s part of what I signed up for as a candidate as an office holder, but I think that there’s been a troubling pattern of comments and behavior that has to be held accountable. So I have sent a letter to the head of NBC expressing the deep offense that I took and pointing out what has been a troubling pattern of demeaning treatment, and I would expect appropriate action to be taken."

Shuster has been temporarily suspended for his comments, and he has apologized. He has said he was trying to make a larger point about how Chelsea, 27, has been enlisted to work for the campaign though she refuses to talk on the record to the media.

But Clinton suggests a "pattern" by MSNBC hosts, because she has also been offended by comments made by MSNBC's Chris Matthews, who -- among other comments -- has implied Clinton only has her senate job because of her husband's infidelity with Monica Lewinsky. Under pressure, Matthews apologized on air for that comment.

The campaign has threatened to boycott pending debates on NBC and Clinton would not say today if she would participate in the NBC sponsored debates.

"We have accepted a lot of debates from a lot of different sponsors and were going to wait and see how this plays out," Clinton said.

God forbit we should encourage Fox News watchers to vote Democratic.
I can't believe some of the nonsense I read here. That kind of "purity" is what lost Kerry the White House. Not the election. The White House.

Thank you for a very good post!

41. If she won't go on NBC because it is biased, then by going on FOX
she is saying it is unbiased. That is the problem.

If she didn't say she wouldn't go on NBC, you could make the arguement that going everywhere is smart, however, she won't go on biased networks, but will go on Fox, which I guess means that she believes Fox isn't biased.

Her arguement on this is as inconsistant as her arguement on the IWR and the Lieberman Iran Resolution.

76. And yet they only scream about purity when it comes to Hillary.
Obama is actively pandering to Republican voters, saying he will negotiate and compromise with the Republicans, saying that he doesn't think that Bush EVER warranted impeachment, not to mention all of his very questionable actions re: the GLBT community... but they're ok with that.

139. Clinton loves it - adds to her victim-hood - draws in the suckers
Those of us who endured 8 years of Clinton victimhood can already see
it being milked to the max.

This gives Clinton more free publicity, since her campaign is nearly broke.

Some people are really sucked into the victim thing.

Democrats need to stand up and say that the stupid and offensive things said by the media - about ALL Democratic candidates - is unacceptable.

If you don't take a stand for Hillary you are encouraging the media to attack Obama next.

17. That's right and Kerry and every Democrat should have said "for shame!"
when the media went after him with the swift boaters.

If every single Democrat in the country had refused to appear on a talk show featuring the swift boat lies the story would have been shelved within minutes.

Instead it went on and on because Democrats let it go on.

Watch the Republican Party. They unload like a ton of bricks when something is said against their own. That's why they win.

33. And most voters are disgusted with candidates who don't support their families.
I watched Dukakis get trounced in the debate with Poppy Bush in response to a hypothetical question. I'll never forget it. I just about fainted.

The correct political response to "How would you feel if someone raped and murdered your wife" is "I'd tear the *bleep* to pieces."

When someone uses the word "pimp" and your daughter's name in the same sentence, the politically savvy response is "censored!" That's exactly what Hillary is doing. No help from certain "Democratis."

point out that his followers don't know his positions and follow him in blind obedience.

This isn't "playing the victim." This is called HITTING BACK.

HARD.

I'm quite sure you'd sit placidly by if appearances by Mrs. Obama and/or her children were referred to as "pimping out."

142. 8 years of Clinton Victimhood is enough
When Bill was president, things were better than with a repug, but unfortunately
Bill damaged the democratic party so much that we lost congress and ended up with
a repig for president. And a repig congress, and repig supreme court justices, and a repig
attorney general.

And Hillary supported the repig war by voting for it.
She gave Bush war powers that he should never have been given.

The democratic party cannot endure another 4 years of CLinton victimhood in the news cycle 24 hours a day. The Clintons will be investigated for their loans, tax returns, CLinton Library,
connections to Kazakstan, etc. There will be new bimbo gates and more.

We need to gain more seats in congress, not lose them.

called Chelsea the "white House dog"? How much of a mom was she when McCain told his offensive joke about Janet Reno being Chelsea's father?

The Clinton's sure can act tough when they get pissed at fair minded people or orgaanizations. They don't act quite so tough when it's a republican or right wing talker.

85. HRC was asked about the attacks at the time & said she was taught to "rise above it" by her own mom
Sounds like the same advice my mother gave me about bullies when I was growing up -- and it didn't work then, either.

THAT'S WHY. And you saw how much good it did her. She has learned the hard way to fight back. You give them an inch and they take a mile.

That was then -- this is now. Hillary is NOT whining. She is NOT rolling over and letting them steamroll her. She is fighting the bullies and I say "You go, girl."

We should all stand up against sexism, whether it be directed at Hillary or any other woman.

I assume that you're quite young, but I'm Obama's age and I know exactly how it feels to be put down for being a female. We think that we're very progressive in this country but we really are not, there's still plenty of sexist people out there and we should all stand up to them because we are women first and political people second.

Get our point? This is not just about Hillary, it's about the continuous disrespect that the media has shown to a FEMALE presidential candidate while they would never think of subjecting a male candidate to such bashing based on their gender.

It's no secret that I support Hillary, but if someone had used that nasty term against Michelle Obama or their girls I would be just as outraged. How dare an anchor in a major network make an analogy that a presidential candidate is a pimp and therefore her daughter a whore??????????????

Has civility sank so low that we find these comments acceptable, particularly if they are directed at a woman who some don't support???????????

I would think that we are human beings first and that should trump party affiliation or preference for a particular candidate. I'm appalled that so many people see nothing wrong in a journalist making sexist remarks about a presidential candidate and her daughter. Besides the total lack of respect demonstrated toward a former First Lady and current US senator!!!!!!

Say NO to misogyny!!!!!!!!! Say NO to MSNBC and any other network where sexism is an acceptable policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

127. You Go Girl !! And cnn/nbc/m$nbc and Obamanation be damned !!
One does not have to be a fucking "Amazing Kreskin" to remember how this "Liberal Media" went out of its way to destroy Dean, Kerry AND GORE. Have we seen the same tactics used on McCain's daughter? Huckabee's children? Michelle Obama? Oprah? I would say that the comments by the Obamabots in this thread are unbelievable but I won't. They are fucking disgusting!

134. Oh, GET THE HELL OVER IT
I'm sick of this self-righteous whining about how families are somehow off limits even if they choose to get involved in political campaigns.

Get a clue: They are NOT.

And I say this from the perspective of a person who was on the receiving end of press nastiness because of my parents' management of a countywide political campaign. At the time that it took place, I was 15 years old. It didn't bother me, and after I assured them I wasn't interested in whining to the media about it, it didn't bother them either.

Hillary is just playing the victim for everything it's worth, and it's pathetic.

145. It makes no difference what point he was trying to make....
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 04:16 PM by BooScout
The fact is his comments were out of line, disgustingly sexist. He's dismissive in his 'apology' in the fact that he tries to explain the point he was making. Our (women) point is that it is NEVER acceptable.

He can apologize until the cows come home......I am over the amount of sexism I have seen leveled at the Clinton campaign and women in general lately.

Enough is enough.

149. I've defended her completely on sexism, but ...
... disagree with her point. She has the right and deserves credit for fighting for women, but I don't agree with her diminishing the issue into a personal matter (and one that I think has no place for a President). The sexist talk by Schuster and Matthews is a feminist issue.
