9. I come from a long line

of leftist subversives and I'm proud of my heritage. I think I got the pragmatism gene from my mom though, somewhat diluting my political purity. Also, that would be a hell of a name for a band. I keep waiting for a band to call themselves Al-Qaeda, but I haven't heard of one brave or stupid enough so far.

I am a proud Democrat and also a Roman Catholic. During the 1988 election I had a bumper sticker on my car for Dukakis. A lady from my parish parked next to me in the church parking lot, saw the sticker and just let me have it. Example: "If you vote for that man you will probably go to hell!!" that sort of thing. I went through the same thing in 1992, 1996, and 2000. It stopped when I took the woman holy communion in the hospital when she was on her deathbed. I still say a little prayer for her every day.

though I still can't figure out what's so "left" about espousing universal health care, an adequate social safety net, energy independence, corporate accountability, progressive taxation, civil liberties, environmentalism, withholding hand-outs from torturers, and fair clean elections. Except for civil liberties (on which they're a little shaky), and the torturers (which most don't know about) most US citizens actually support these things too. The younger folk here will not know that during the Nixon years we were talking about instituting a guaranteed national income. YES, the Nixon years. How far we have come, when on a "Progressive" board these stances are considered "far left".
