DK: Missing NM ballot boxes found in Clinton supporters' homes?
According to Heath Hausamann' blog:

http://haussamen.blogspot.com/...

Apparently three missing ballot boxes from Rio Arriba county, and a fourth from Sandoval County account for the 2% of precincts that have yet to report in the New Mexico caucus, which has Hillary Clinton currently leading Barack Obama by roughly 200 votes.

Well, it appears that the missing Rio Arriba county ballots been found in the home of county Democratic Party Chair Theresa Martinez. Her husband, Sen. Richard Martinez, has endorsed Hillary Clinton.

According to Hausamann:

Several sources told me the ballot boxes spent the night at the home of Rio Arriba County Democratic Party Chair Theresa Martinez, whose state-lawmaker husband, Sen. Richard Martinez, endorsed Hillary Clinton. But Richard Martinez told Santa Fe New Mexican reporter Kate Nash that the boxes actually spent the night in the homes of three polling-place managers. He gave Nash no explanation for why the results from those ballots weren’t reported to the state party last night and why they were instead kept overnight in officials’ homes.

"The site managers locked them and they kept them and they took them to my wife this morning," Nash quoted Richard Martinez as saying.
Regardless of which candidate you support, this is the kind of voter disenfranchisement we've been accusing the GOP of for years, and is absolutely despicable. Please rec this diary, and feel free to forward this information on to whomever you see fit.

But if it was locked, they can't get to the ballots. They would know if the ballots were tampered with. If they were republican, I would see a problem with that.

27. So we should give a damn what a
pinche tejano thinks about our screwed up primary?

I can guarantee you that no one in a rural New Mexican county or precinct had to steal anything for Hillary Clinton. The only counties in which Obama did better than Clinton were Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Sandoval, and Bernalillo--the heavily populated middle Rio Grande valley where the wealthy "latte Dems" are concentrated.

Sorry--the fuckups and long lines were simply because state party chair Brian Colon was asleep at the wheel and failed to anticipate the huge turnout, consequently the polling places that were open were woefully understaffed and undersupplied.

I was a volunteer at Mary Ann Binford Elementary School on Albuquerque's West Mesa. There were something like 6 precincts voting there, as opposed to the usual 2-3, but only one table staffed by 3 people--and worst of all, only one voter list. In combining the six precinct lists into one, something like 1/3 of the names had been lost. Consequently those people had to vote with a provisional ballot--which meant standing in another long line. A LOT of people simply said fuggit and went home.

AFAIK the situation was the same in most of the heavily populated counties I listed above, and thus the 17,000 provisional ballots they're still counting.

Oh yeah--Obama's campaign had sent an observer to oversee the ballot counting at Binford Elementary. The Clinton campaign had not, so I agreed to stay and perform that function, just as I had done for Wes Clark in 2004. The count was 300 Obama, 441 Clinton, with about 350 sealed provisional ballots to be counted later.

Finally, there are representatives from each campaign overseeing the counting of the provisional ballots.

So you know what you can do with your insults and your assholery. You are no credit to Senator Obama.

I'm not going to say more, because I don't want bad things to happen to she or her family.

But I don't trust Hill as far as I can throw her, and this is why: double dealing, hours being billed that were not worked, and disappearing files. If she was this bad as a power-hungry lawyer, imagine what she'll be like as president.

I can't stand Obama or Hilary. I was parying for Edwards to stay in. I can't stand Obama for his McClurkin thing, but knowing what my cousin told me, I have little choice.

Initial Caucus Vote Tally Completed

The Associated Press
The state Democratic Party has wrapped up its initial count of ballots in Tuesday's presidential caucus and moved on to 8,575 provisional ballots cast by people whose names weren't on the roster at the polling place where they voted.
Democratic officials would not estimate how long it might take to count the provisional ballots, but they have said the ballots would not change the outcome of the election.
----------------------------------------------------------
More than 106,000 people voted in Tuesday's primary, surprising party officials who had hoped for a turnout of 50,000.
The results from six of the caucus' 169 regular precincts were released Wednesday night. Those precincts had not been counted Tuesday night due to a variety of problems. In Taos County, for example, caucus workers went home because of a snowstorm.

29. Because it was actually a PRIMARY--but only for
presidential candidates. The down-ballot primary is still in June.

Bill Richardson was instrumental in getting our Democratic presidential primary moved up to February back in 2004, but it had to be termed a caucus to distinguish it from the "real" primary in June.

Recounts might spread to New Mexico, Oregon
November 14, 2000

Web posted at: 7:35 a.m. EST (1235 GMT)
-----------------------------
Despite the added boost for Gore in the second-most populous county in southern New Mexico, officials said the winner of the state was still too close to call.

Earlier, election officials turned up two ballots in a warehouse where some precinct supply boxes were stored and brought 16 locked boxes back to be opened by a presiding judge.

---------------------------------------
A recount seemed likely in New Mexico, though its five electoral votes alone would not affect the outcome of the presidential race. With about 570,000 votes cast statewide, Bush led by a four-vote margin, according to Monday figures from Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron's office.

Gore once led in New Mexico by 7,000 votes, and was considered the winner on Election Night. But computer glitches, more than 250 missing ballots and complaints from several hundred residents who said they didn't receive absentee ballots resulted in the evaporation of Gore's lead.

Republican attorneys are requesting that state police impound early-voting and absentee ballots in case of a challenge or recount -- a move New Mexico Democrats denounced. State Democratic Chairwoman Diane Denish called the Republicans' request "hypocritical."

Police seized ballots in seven counties during the weekend under orders from two state judges. Under New Mexico law, either party may request impoundment. It is then up to a judge to decide whether to grant the request.

Now that Bush is leading, Denish said, Republicans "suddenly want the ballot count to end." She says when they were losing, "they did everything they could to get questionable ballots counted.

Low turnout expected at New Mexico caucus

Heather Clark/Associated Press
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
http://www.abqtrib.com/news/2008/jan/29/low-turnout-expected-new-mexico-caucus/

Brian Colón, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said that without the injection of money from the candidates' get-out-the-vote efforts, it will be tough to get people to the polls next Tuesday.

"The only thing that I kind of lose some sleep over is I wish I had half a million dollars to promote the thing," Col¢n said during a recent break from answering phones at the party's Albuquerque headquarters.

"I think we will have had great success in New Mexico if we turn out 30,000 to 40,000 people," he said. That compares with about 105,000 votes cast in 2004.

----------------------------------------------------------
Several county party officials in more populated areas of the state sounded frazzled as they tried to locate enough volunteers, grappled with finalizing polling places and readied advertisements for local media in the two weeks before the caucus. But officials in the smaller towns generally said their preparations were going smoothly.
