WAYNE MADSEN

Knight Ridder/Tribune

Political pundits will claim that it is too risky to place two sitting senators on the same presidential ticket. It may be uncommon for two senators to run together, but it is definitely not risky.

The last team of senators who won the White House was that of John F. Kennedy, who, like John F. Kerry, was a junior senator from Massachusetts when he was elected in 1960 along with his vice presidential running mate, the senior senator from Texas, Lyndon B. Johnson.

Kerry would be wise to emulate Kennedy and select the senior senator from North Carolina, John Edwards, as his running mate.

A Kerry-Edwards ticket would provide a welcome contrast to Bush-Cheney. Kerry has the political experience to be president and the military background to consider carefully when it is proper to commit U.S. military men and women to combat.

1. JFK and LBJ both had military experience
Think like a "NASCAR dad" for a moment:

JE doesn't have military experience.
The only "weakness" in JK's polling against * is in the area of fighting terrorism.
I love JE, but he couldn't help those particular poll numbers.
Clark is the only one who can shore up those poll numbers, IMHO.

7. Clark attacked Kerry too much to be VP
We seem to forget TN and VA all too easily.

Clark went for the throat against Kerry.

Clark attacked Kerry on affirmative action, taxes, Iraq, Patriot Act, and being a "Washington Insider"

There seems to be too much blood spilled (not bad blood necessarily), even though Wes has done an about face and has been stumping for Kerry lately. It would be too easy for * to use against the ticket.

11. Insults on the Campaign Trail Mean Nothing
In 1980, a candidate in the Republican primary called Reagan's economic plan "voodoo economics" The man went on to become Reagan's VP and our 41st president.

Bush Jr's campaign absolutely slimed Senator John McCain in the 2000 Republican Presidential primary, and still the Senator, largely hailed as a bold voice of independence rolled over & campaigned for Dubya.

2. why don't sharks eat lawyers? professional courtesy. As to Senator
Edwards, trying to present him as a hero of the little guy is simply silly.

JFK took LBJ on his ticket because he needed what Johnson brought with him.

What would John Edwards bring to the ticket that would offset his history as a trial lawyer who made millions in his profession? Hard kind of thing for the average Joe to identify with. Most dealings the majority of people have with lawyers involve some very unpleasant issues. They don't inspire much in the way of support.

I had a very good lawyer represent me in a custody dispute a decade or so ago. We won but I wouldn't vote for him to become VP or even city councilman. The skillset is not necessarily good for the job.

Just consider how many of the politicians that have screwed up this country are lawyers and you'll get an idea what I'm talking about.

3. "what planet are you living on?" Do you know what % of politicians are
lawyers? Of course they are going to be the same % that have "screwed up this country." They are also going to be the same % that have done great things.

Your lawyer is not necessarily representative of anyone else but himself/herself. All lawyers do not possess the same skills or personal qualities.

As others have repeatedly stated, whenever the mindless attack on JRE's career has been launched, he has a great response, and brings out his clients. That won him North Carolina in 1998.

4. Do a bit of research before
you condemn Edwards just because he's a lawyer. I like Dean - I don't like ANY of the others for President, but please offer valid criticism if you must.

6. Who will vote to put another Republican in the White House
Yep, one of the above mentioned, just last year or the year before, stood in a republican metting and praise the election of George Bush, If KErry should die in office we would have another republican in the White House if Clark were picked for the VP spot..Seems that my liking Edwards is what most Democrats are doing, Did I see Edwards approved by 30 % while Clarke and the gange were in one digit nimbers and most of them below 5%

Its Edwards boys and girls, Kerry and Edwards is going to break the hold of the republicans in the South.

8. You may be crossing the line
in attaching the "Republican label" onto Wes Clark. The man is a great leader and doesn't deserve the label.

Many people will be deeply offended by your comment (just like I am offended when people use silly memes to stigmatize Edwards), and you may want to edit it.

9. Is their a feud between Edwards and Kerry
I saw an allusion to it on another board but I've never seen any actual facts. Is it true?

10. Do You Think Maybe They're Biased?
I mean, it is a Charlotte paper, from Senator Edward's home state.
(I didn't read the article 'cos I didn't want to register)

Don't get me wrong, I think Edwards would make a fine running mate for Kerry: Southern, but also has mid-west appeal, very likeable, knowlegable on trade issues, has experience but not like a career politician.

Oh, heck, I'm biased too. I was an Edwards supporter.
