“When I Heard Obama speak, I cried. He reminds me of FDR”
On this weeks Iowa Public Radio “Dr. Politics” program (Mon. 2/4/08, 1 hr.) all of the callers (5-6) were Obama ‘supporters’. Most were of the ‘most electable’ vein, one was of the ‘former Republican wanting to vote Democratic but can’t pull the lever for Clinton’ vein, but the two most memorable were the ladies in their 80’s.

Both of these Great (Great?) granny supporters noted how much Obama reminds them of FDR in the inspiration and sense of purpose they feel when listening to Obama’s speeches. One noted that Obama brings her to tears because it reminded her of the hope she felt listening to FDR as her husband was in the Pacific fighting. The other noted that Obama is ‘young’ (inexperienced), but that the ability to instill hope and a sense of purpose is more important during trying times based on her living through the FDR years.

So, was FDR the leader of a cult also?

4. Rather stupid analogy
I never said this hysteria was only among the young.

Anyone who starts crying and thinking about FDR because of a speech by Obama has lost perspective to me, period.

There is nothing wrong at all with inspiring hope and purpose. It is a great gift for a politician to be able to inspire that.

It's when that is all there is to it, just.... feelings.

I distrust, strongly, emotional voters. They make emotional, rather than rational, decisions.

And politics is the one place where investing your heart almost guarantees having it ripped out.

6. It's obvious that you haven't been listening to what Obama
is saying. The first rule of expressing an opinion is knowing what you're talking about. Especially when you use the loaded term "stupid."

Further, I distrust voters who vote only "rationally." It's the way we got Bush's second term. People were rational all right. They believed, rationally, his blather about keeping us safe.

5. I have an aunt who is 82 and said the same thing almost
She told me about how they used to listen to FDR on the radio. She was born in 1925, and was old enough by the time FDR took office to remember him well. He was president until she was 20.

She got teary eyed over it, and she wasn't crying for her political ambition but for the hope she thinks Obama brings for the future. She doesn't want to go out under Bush's watch, and has been worried about where we are headed.

They have seen this country at its highs and lows. I trust their judgment!
