Clinton Makes Light of Fashion Disasters
NYT/AP: Clinton Makes Light of Fashion Disasters
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: February 8, 2008

NEW YORK (AP) -- Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton admits her fashion sense is not nearly as sharp as her political instincts in the latest issue of Us Weekly. Clinton pokes a rare bit of fun at herself, playing along as the celebrity magazine explores some of her more noteworthy fashion disasters over the years.

In a four-page photo spread titled ''My Worst Outfit Ever,'' the New York senator and presidential candidate tries to explain some of her more questionable wardrobe selections -- from drab golfing attire to strange hats. Take the gigantic, multicolored coat she's shown wearing during her first Senate campaign in 2000. ''I'm a big believer in recycling -- even carpets!'' Clinton explains.

Or the brown, polka-dotted polyester dress and jacket she once sported as first lady in 1997. ''This outfit isn't that bad, it's just an optical illusion,'' she says. Even the cream colored, peasant-style dress she wore in her 1975 wedding to Bill Clinton isn't spared. ''They got the idea for the 'Seinfeld' puffy shirt from me,'' she cracks.

Things have improved over the years. Clinton, 60, has generally won points for style on the campaign trail, matching figure-flattering designer pantsuits with conservative jewelry.

The magazine hit newsstands Friday.

1. It's great that she's got a humanizing moment here. She needs more of them. But...
it's also pretty lame that this is how she has to do it -- no male candidate would ever have to face the fashion police.

8. Al Gore had to. Remember the "earth tones" controversy? And when
he gained weight on the campaign trail, they implied he was trying to be sexy by wearing tight jeans. Yeah. Sure. What middle-aged American man hasn't found his jeans getting tighter?

No, America is becoming equal opportunity when it comes to such absurdity.

2. Glad she can poke fun at herself
this can only help her with the public.

But what's wrong with a peasant style wedding dress? I wore a similar one in 1989 when I was married.

4. I like her sense of humor...
There's no way I could come up with so many outfits ~ just finding something other than jeans is a challenge for me. She does very well!

5. It's harder to 'dress for success' on the campaign trail or in the WH
There are occasions when you have to accomodate "ballistic clothing" into your wardrobe...

6. But her fashion this election cycle has been mahvelous
I think she's never looked better: her hair, makeup, and the colors they've put her in are very attractive, age appropriate. Finally, she hit her mark!

(Disclosure: I voted for Obama, but as a blankety-year-old woman, I will defend Hillary's current style to the death. Also her sense of humor, and her smarts.)

7. Her hair
is the biggest improvement, by far. God, I watched that MSNBC special on her last night and just cringed at some of her hair-dos and makeup jobs over the years.
