MSNBC: Michigan may hold primaries again, Florida likely won't
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 10:56 PM by Alhena
MSNBC had their resident political expert on tonight and he said that there was a lot of dissension within the Michigan Democratic people- especially from African-Americans- to hold a primary or caucus with all candidates on the ballot. The expert said the DNC would be perfectly fine with this, and he seemed like he thought it was going to happen.

He said Florida was a different story- the Florida democrats are likely going to try to get their delegates credentialed at the convention. But strangely enough, he said he thought the would only be seated based on the *national* popular electoral votes, which is basically 50-50 between Hillary and Obama. He said that committee at the convention which would decide this would be half Clinton and half Obama supporters and he thought that's how it would shake out. Doesn't seem to me like that's any different than not seating them at all- I'm sure Hillary wouldn't like that result. But that's what he said.

So it looks like Michigan will vote again. I suppose Hillary may have an edge, but that's not a sure thing. Michigan is 15% African-American and has a large Arab population which will presumably be favorable to Obama and his consistent anti-Iraq War stance.

But Senator Nelson and the Florida Democratic Party had said they wouldn't have another primary and would sit out the convention if the delegates weren't proportioned based on the florida primary on january 29th. Maybe things have changed this evening.

10. I'm sure that is their preference, but ...
the DNC's credibility is at stake and they can't really have a formal vote saying that Florida's delegates don't count if they have an early primary and then turn around and reverse themselves when Florida throws a temper tantrum.

17. Even with all this controversy Florida could still go blue
in the GE. We had record turnouts and it just depends on how the florida media spins this DNC vs florida democratic party fiasco. We have a lot of independents which I think will be the deciding factor.

8. I wouldn't make that assumption about the Arab population
Hillary wants to get the troops out and that means something to ARab-Americans too, possibly more than how she voted 5 years ago. I think the Arab community will be split on who to support.

14. Obama could be regarded as a sell-out. But who knows.
Large African-American population but also large working class whites. Hillary would have her work cut for her here. But she might have a plus in coming out early to franchise these voters.

12. If they do anything it should be in the form of a primary. More peoples'
votes count.

15. Fair enough
Florida did have all candidates on the ballot.

MI didn't. "Uncommitted" was hardly something that got many to go the polls.

16. I hope Michigan does this, and if they do GOOD FOR THEM.
I will fully support the final result, whatever it would be.

Michigan taking the lead to rectify the blunder they committed would really put pressure on the DINOs down in Florida to consider a legitimate primary/caucus.
