17. Ohio could go either way.
Especially since it's an open primary. Penn too.

Don't know about Texas. That'll probably go to Clinton.

20. Ex-Ohioan and I see HRC, should she win the nom, losing Ohio handily to McCain.
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 10:23 PM by arewenotdemo
But Obama may take it.

Including Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius on the ticket (from Cincinnati and Catholic) could really help him secure it.

4. Mark my words
Texans hate Hillary. She is poison for every down-ballot democrat. Absolute poison.

25. I'm talking in the general
She has no chance in Texas in the general (as opposed to your BS myopic post that she could turn AZ blue against McCain). Her mere presence on the Texas ballot is the death knell to 50 - 150 highly qualified down-ballot dems who have a fighting chance with Barack on the top of the ticket.

And I am going to work my butt off to ensure that she doesn't win.

7. But the next two weeks are going to be difficult
I think Hillary is behind everywhere except maybe Maine.

The next few weeks will be Obama's golden era. But after that, the fad wears off, the bubble bursts, and he has to transition from a sprint to a marathon. It will be the real test of his executive ability.

I think Obama will win most of the contests which will give him added momentum going into March 4.

with a lot of independents too.

I like San Antonio very much and enjoy Austin. But nasty Bush country there. Yuck.

Never liked the Dallas Cowboys, either. So there.

15. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
By the time those primaries roll around Obama might have enough of an elected delegate lead that even if he narrowly loses those three states he will still come out ahead overall. Look for Obama to sweep every primary and caucus that takes place before those three states vote.

23. I'm just jazzed that my vote in Texas is actually going to mean something this year
And like thousands of other Texas Democratic activists, I'm struggling to understand the rather byzantine rules that will govern our selection of delegates between March 4 and our convention in June. Like primaries? We've got one! Like caucuses? We use them too! Good thing we had a floor fight for state party chair in 2006 so we at least had a scrimmage to get ready for things this year. God, I LOVE this game!

24. been to Texas once, got chased out of the state by flying bugs the size of Toyota Camry's
I used to date a girl who lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Seemed like a nice enough area. Was explicitly told NOT to wear a Pittsburg Steelers jersey around town.

Pennsylvania is okay. Boring state to drive through though, between Pittsburg and Philly there's not a lot going on.

26. I am almost certain that Ohio is a closed primary...
I am almost certain that Ohio is a closed primary. I thought for sure at the beginning of this primary season that my primary vote wouldn't mean a damn thing because everything would be over on super Tuesday. I am very excited to hear that a debate coming to Cleveland as well. What I am not excited about (as an Obama supporter) is that Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Ted Strictland are supporting Hillary. I have heard some rumors that Strictland may be on Hillary's short list for VPs. However, I don't think he would be a "sexy" choice for her and she very well may lose Ohio in the GE. I have learned that once you get out of Cuyahoga county, the rest of the state quickly becomes Kentucky.

28. You are a little misinformed...
you can "change" parties at the polling station and vote either Democrat or republican. You are then a registered Democrat or republican depending on which party you voted in for the primary. One can be challenged by one of the polling judges of the party you are changing to but I have never seen that happen. I am also a polling judge in Warren County Ohio. There is also mandatory training for this election for all polling judges, not that everyone will show up.

As someone who lives in SW Ohio I also take issue with your comment about the State, outside of Cuyahoga County, being like Kentucky. That comment is just mean spirited.

As far as HRC losing the general election I don't think so. Even down here (near KY) people are generally fed up with the republicans. I think it will be a repeat of the general election in 2006 when Ted Strickland blew out Blackwell. Ohio has been bleeding for some time now because of the republican policies and there is definitely a feeling of change in the air, even down here in the most red part of the state.

29. thank you for clearing that up
Thank you for clearing up the issue of people voting opposite their registration.

You are also right that I should not have compared the rest of Ohio to Kentucky. However, I have lived in Ohio for 14 years and the 2006 election is the first time I have seen a Democrat win anything statewide.

Comparing Strictland's victory to a GE win is specious. Bob Taft absolutely doomed the Rethugs in Ohio and the nutbag (and crook) Blackwell was not a "better" alternative to Taft. There are still a lot of Republicans in this state. If they are energized, they have proven time after time that they can win in this conservative state. However, I do believe that many of the American taliban types will sit on their hands this election because the Rethugs have already used gay marriage in 2004.
