What were the 2 Dean remarks that were most attacked, before Iowa?
There were 2 comments Dean made shortly before Iowa that brought especially savage attacks. One was about "We're not really safer, even with Saddam captured." That one was ferociously assailed by Kerry, as well as by the RW & media.

Can anyone help me remember the other one?

1. Was it the one about
being the candidate for the southern voters with confederate flags on their pickups?

3. I don't think it was that one, although there was a big fuss about that,
too --

The one I'm trying to remember was easy to interpret, in terms of why it was so threatening to Establishment interests. I think it was an Iraq-related comment, but I'm kind of blocking on the specifics...

Thanks, though!

4. Bingo!
At the time, I thought it was a courageous and totally right on thing to say. I couldn't BELIEVE flack that came down! Despicable! People are sooooooo stupid, sometimes...

7. I was kind of able to see why
some people would be bothered by the reference but it was waaaaaay overblown.

I know I wrote a post defending the people who were upset about it but he was making a very valid point. We'll never be a decent society or a strong Party as long as we keep feeding into division.

14. It's interesting, right from the start, I thought
it was a GREAT thing to say. I mean, how often have we at DU discussed the fact the repugs have done a real bang-up job of getting the non-wealthy class to vote AGAINST their own economic interests?

When Dean made this comment, I thought it was one the best pieces of truth-telling to have gone down in the campaign to that point.

My biggest disappointment was how Dean started back-pedalling when the heat came on, instead of just pushing forward and making his point even stronger.

I'd already been committed to Kucinich no matter what, but I figured TWO voices for the People was even better than one, so I DID have good hopes for Dean. I found his duck and cover stuff after this remark very disappointing, and I basically stopped paying him any attention after that.

2. How 'bout the one about breaking up media monopolies?
"Midway through his Dec. 1 appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball" show, Dean said that he wants to "break up giant media enterprises." "

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1204-14.htm

I think that one really pissed the "Liberal Media" off. Not that they needed any motivation to dump on Gov. Dean.

6. I thought of the Confederate flag comment
because that one got him blasted by the media and other candidates too. Incredibly stupid, imo, if Dean supporters were right about it being part of his stump speeches long prior to the fuss.

8. BTW, look how absolutely prophetic the last sentence of that article
turned out to be: (It was written Dec 4)

But if Dean continues to raise sharp questions about media diversity and democracy, he is likely to face the wrath of a corporate media behemoth that does not tolerate major threats to its outsized power.

9. The United States should be even-handed in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute
That one hurt him alot too. Even-handed foreign policy is a bad thing to some people, I guess.

12. There was that one...
and he also said America was no safer with Saddam caught. And he was right! He also said he wanted to break up the media, and the confederate flag thing. I knew what he was talking about, but does that matter?

10. Dean remarks
his remark that Us policy in Middle east should be even-handed ,stirred a media frenzy for almost a week

The media spined for some time about a remark he had made during an interview with a Canadian media outlet where he criticized Iowa caucus or something in this line.

And of course his remark about the confederate flag

And of course the SCREAM!

16. Yes, and Pelosi and the gang sent him a nasty letter
about the "even-handed" remark last fall. That's when I knew he was going to have problems with the Dem establishment. Shame on you, Howard Dean, for wanting to be fair in the middle east! SHAME ON YOU!!! :eyes:

13. A five year old remark made abiut caucues on Canadian TV
He was also assailed for saying what every fucking pundit and strategist says about caucuses, that they tend to bring out the more extreme people in the parties rather then the average voters.

This OLD interview was dug out and trumpeted as one of Dean's "gaffes."

Jesus Christ they should have gone back to something he said in high school, it would be about as relevant.

I hate the whores who blindly repeat the "conventional wisdom" of the day.

18. As a Dean supporter, the one that got to me
and made me wake up in the middle of the night was his comment about Osama Bin Laden. I hear James Carville went ballistic about that one. That was about the same time as the "no safer" comment concerning SH.

What Dean said was something about bringing Osama to justice and Dean said he couldn't say he was guilty. I think what Dean meant was as President, the top law officer of the land, he would need to do the innocent til proven gulity gig.

He said Osama deserved a fair trial. An Hour later he said Osama deserved death. It was a little dizzying.

it highlighted the desperation he was feeling as he knew things were turning to poop and ready to go to pieces.
