I knew this was going to be huge when we showed up early, and two lines already stretched around the Grove clear to Main street. Cold air and the beginnings of a light snowfall didn't deter anyone, and 8,400+ ballots were cast, with 6,500 jammed into Qwest Arena and an overflow crowd waiting outside.
I almost began to feel sorry for the Clinton supporters as the waves of noise coming from the Obama side drowned them out repeatedly. The energy in the arena was incredible with these two groups, along with the Edwards suporters and 'undecideds'. It was almost like watching a championship basketball game.
The evening began with Idaho's beloved Bethine Church, widow of Senator Frank Church, speaking for Hillary. She received standing ovations from everyone there. We met her afterwards and spoke with her briefly.
Boise mayor Dave Bieter spoke for Obama and led the crowd in a Basque cheer (he is Basque): "gora Obama!"
With both congressional districts tallied, Obama won 81% of the votes, and Clinton 15%.
It was enough to make me feel Democrats may actually have a chance here in the general election, but I know better after 35 years than to get my hopes up!
