The Rev. Al Sharpton wants Sen. John Kerry to adopt an ''urban agenda'' and possibly help pay Sharpton's campaign bills.

BY JAMES RAINEY

Los Angeles Times Service

The Rev. Al Sharpton may soon drop his long-shot campaign for the presidency, if presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry agrees to adopt a more pronounced ''urban agenda,'' sources in Sharpton's camp said.

Sharpton confirmed in a telephone interview that representatives of his campaign have talked to the Democratic National Committee and Kerry operatives about how he might ''fold into'' a campaign to defeat President Bush.

Nursing a cold at his Brooklyn home, Sharpton said Thursday that the discussions with Kerry's campaign have only begun and that he planned to remain on the stump for the time being. A trip to Florida this weekend was likely.

'I don't know if `discontinue' is the word I would use,'' said Sharpton, referring to his candidacy. ``But, clearly, from the beginning, our intention was to go out and affect policy. It was always a matter of how we would fold into an anti-Bush campaign. ''

1. Kerry should let Al twist in the wind
We're behind enough in funds as it is and this might be a good place for Sharpton to learn you don't order caviar and champagne from room service without being on the hook for a huge bill. Kerry might also remember how Bill Clinton scored points with moderates in '92 with his public snubbing of Jesse Jackson.

8. the Sister Souljah incident, I'd guess
When Clinton castigated Jackson at his own Rainbow Coalition meeting for supporting Sister Souljah after she made remarks about killing white people.

3. I can understand the part about
an urban agenda, but paying Al's bills comes under the definition of Total Chutzpa. I have a relative deep inside the Kerry campaign and there aren't any extra bags of money to give away to anyone. Jeez.

7. As if the democrats don't already relie heavily on urban areas
Putting a higher priority on Urban areas only lestens the priority on suburban and rural areas, which is completely backward thinking.

I don't care how many people laughed at Sharptons jokes. The man is a demagogue and close-minded.

A professional minority if there ever was one. The party need not be held hostage by someone who's campaign is run by Roger Stone

10. Not Necessarily In That Order
I love Al, but his candidacy has been more about himself than forwarding an urban agenda.

Instead of paying his campaign debt, they should give Sharpton a talk show.
