We know Hillary can take the heat. But we have no idea how Obama will do. He has been treated tenderly. And there is a method to that madness.
As I have been saying, to wretched excess: the press want it as close to 50/50 as possible. It brings the money in. For Clinton to have vanquished Obama on Tuesday would mean the loss of 6 months of revenue. They may let the polling diverge by as much as ten points, but they will keep bringing it back to zero. All spring, all summer.
The media intend to finely calibrate their instruments with these primaries. Their real use will come in the fall.
Every presidential race in the last 50 years has been conducted like this. It failed a few times -- for example, Nixon v McGovern, Reagan v Carter, and Reagan v Mondale. It has been much more difficult to do in primaries, but I think they have finally perfected the system for primaries, too.
If Obama's "mo" continues and the press keeps hammering on her, you can be sure they want an Obama-McCain matchup. It is possible if their demographic research shows Obama with a much bigger media audience. Otherwise, they will push and pull until the day before the election.
We should have a better idea of their strategy a week from now.
