WOW look at what is happening in KANSAS!!

With presidential nominations unresolved, voter interest is soaring for Super Tuesday
By SCOTT CANON
The Kansas City Star

A two-hour drive to a Democratic caucus Tuesday in McPherson, Kan., isn’t discouraging Lincoln High School teacher Mike Schrant (left) and two of his students, Tommy Knapp (standing) and Eric Budreau, from attending it.

LINCOLN, Kan. | Come Tuesday night, Mike Schrant plans to hop behind the wheel, load up some high school seniors and drive 90 windswept miles.

Simply to vote.

He’ll be heading to not-so-nearby McPherson to caucus in a presidential contest that, for a change, hasn’t already been settled elsewhere.

“I haven’t seen kids this interested in politics since we had (Ross) Perot running in ’92,” said the Lincoln High School social studies teacher and Democrat. “It’s different this year.”

Picking presidents isn’t a winter sport reserved for Iowa and New Hampshire this year. The tight Democratic and Republican races have juiced record voter turnout across the country.

Just look at central and western Kansas, a deep red region in a predictably red state, where the idiosyncrasies of the Democrats’ system demand folks to spend up to four hours Tuesday traveling to and from caucuses. Yet across that flat horizon, voters talk eagerly about making the trip.

“We can’t wait,” said Phyllis Winckler, who lives on a farm outside Sylvan Grove and just shy of two hours from her caucus.

Can we stop fussing about our candidates for long enough to celebrate this enthusiasm for Democrats in KANSAS?? The republicans don't caucus in Kansas until Saturday so anyone talking about going to a Tuesday caucus is voting for a Democrat. In a deeply red state. Can I get some cheers here? :)

Oh and for those who doubt this is real, here is a license tag I found yesterday at a local mall:

2. BANDWIDTH exceeded. Cannot see your pic.
I think it is GREAT that people are motivated. It's good news for democracy!!!

I still think the caucus system totally sucks, though. It disenfranchises anyone who can't be there--like the military, cops, firemen, medical people, cashiers on duty, people who work shifts, people in hospital or nursing homes....and in this case, people without a car or a ride.

5. FIxed picture - thanks.
As for rides, we here in the big city are organizing carpools and offering rides to those who have no transportation. But I don't know if the rural areas are doing that too.

and give respect and listen... we can change minds and change votes.

I am glad people are getting excited!!

8. We owe Howard Dean and the DNC
He has put a permanent office with staffers in every congressional district.

Thank you Howard!!

9. Johnson County is so strange.
At least when I lived there it was very Republican although not all that socially conservative, they have always voted Republican just because that's how it has always been. It didn't really make sense to me at all. Things seem to be changing now that the religious whackjobs took over. Republicans are switching parties and people like my parents have no choice but to vote Dem, or at least DINO. It's better than nothing I suppose.

12. A lot of the folks who register repub in Jo Co are actually Dems
We are working at getting them to change their registration. And our Jo Co Dems events are standing room only lately. :)

We also tripled the Dem representation from Jo Co in the state house in 2006. Went from one to three. :)

14. That's such good news, great work!
I've been working on my parents for about 20 years now, I'd be tickled if they became real Democrats this year.

11. I think this is so exciting...
Can you believe the energy out there for our Democratic caucus? I think that being part of Super Tuesday accounts for some of it, but...wow. My 72 year old mother has already checked her caucus location and is running a carpool with friends who don't drive. She's always been a Democrat but never caucused - now she's on fire to do so. It's funny watching her organize this thing with her friends - she's even driving a Hillary supporter because she just thinks that everyone should participate, regardless of candidate (although she's firmly in the Barack Chalk Jayhawk camp).

19. Makes me proud to be a Kansan, for once.
ok, so i go to school at the University of Kansas, and I've grown up in Kansas my whole life. There has never been much discussion or participation in Kansas because everyone blindly votes Repug, with no insight or anything. It is amazing to see all the right wingers that are coming on board as a result of this election. Much of it is due to Obama and his Kansas ties, but Hillary plays an important role also. She is getting a lot of attention from middle-aged and elderly people, a key demo in the state. It is sooo exciting to see the Dems in play in Kansas!

Great to hear this.
At first, I had this confused with a diary from proud2BAmurkin, but I'm glad I clicked on it.
