From John Edwards to Barack Obama
written by my husband and me, who decided separately but came to the same conclusion

Today, we took off our John Edwards bumper stickers and replaced them with ones for Barack Obama. It wasn’t an easy decision for either of us. We’re both sad that John suspended his campaign and are proud to have supported him since 2004. His voice has been the main force in shaping the debate. He has set the agenda and he has been the one to put the most important issues front and center.

But, as sad and disappointed as we are that John and Elizabeth will not move into the White House next year, we have to face the fact that he is no longer running. As tough as it is to accept, we can only imagine how hard the decision to stop the fight for the nomination must have been for them. But they concluded, as John said in New Orleans, that it is time for him to step aside. For a variety of reasons, his message was not getting across the way that it needed to in order to break through. He had more success in shaping the message than in broadcasting it. That is no small accomplishment and one of which John, Elizabeth and all of his supporters can be proud.

We could still vote for John as he will be on our ballots. But that’s not the best way to honor his campaign. It’s not the best way to turn his ideas into action. John Edwards is not going to get any more delegates. He was having a hard time getting delegates while he was running, which is why he decided to step aside. So now, it’s also time for us to move on. It is time to switch our allegiance, energy and support to the best candidate still running. We believe that candidate is Barack Obama.

We supported John Edwards yesterday and Barack Obama today because we agree with both of them that our country is in need of positive change. We agree with both of them that we all need to join together as a country to bring power to the people and reject the forces of the status quo.

Obama is far and away the best person to continue to carry that message of change in conjunction with a message of hope. For a variety of reasons, Obama has had more success than Edwards in reaching a critical mass of voters. Importantly, he has committed to us all, through John, that he will make ending poverty and economic inequality central to his presidency. To be fair, Hillary Clinton gave John Edwards that same pledge. However, in combining the commitment to ending poverty with the ability to inspire, Obama has earned our support. He has already shown an ability to fight the status quo by bringing new people into politics, by energizing those felt like they had no role to play, and by giving a voice to those that thought they had none.

Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will lead the world to combat the threats of the 21st century – nuclear weapons and terrorism; climate change and poverty; genocide and disease. Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will bring our troops home, close Guantanamo, restore habeas corpus, and improve our relations with our allies. We’re supporting a candidate who will provide access to health care for all who want it and monetary assistance to those who can’t pay for it alone. Today, we’re supporting a candidate who wants to recognize full civil unions for LGBT couples, repeal the so-called “defense of marriage act,” and end “don’t ask, don’t tell”. Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will create a “green” job corps, support a living wage, and invest in clean energy. Today, we’re supporting a candidate who has the vision to lead, the power to inspire and the ability to effect change.

Today, we’re supporting Barack Obama.

2. I understand. I took off my Obama bumpersticker and put on Edwards a while back.
Thank goodness my primary is over, I could not vote for Obama after his pandering to Christian conservatives over gays stunt.

9. it's tough when all the candidates have feet of clay
which, all candidates do in some way or another.

But at least Obama has voted the right way in the past -- voting against an anti-gay marriage amendment and sponsoring a hate crimes bill that included sexual orientation and gender identity. Those actions make me inclined to believe what he says about gay rights in spite of his using a bigot to get votes.

30. Not what Edwards would say because
Orangepeel68 wrote:
"Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will lead the world to combat the threats of the 21st century – nuclear weapons and terrorism" -- BUT Edwards pointed out that Obama is for nuclear power which are terrorist targets in addition to all the other things wrong with it. (And Clinton pointed out Obama takes so much money from nuclear industry. Spent uranium from nuclear power can be used for dirty bombs so there is a connection here.

OP68 wrote: climate change and poverty -- BUT Edwards pointed out that Obama was late to climate change, supporting liquified coal during this campaign and being weak on climate change goals. And Obama is weak on fighting poverty, too, as Jesse Jackson pointed out

OP68 wrote; genocide and disease. -- ALL our candidates did that

OP68: "Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will bring our troops home," -- Obama has been the least clear of all major candidates on this. Do you really know when they come home and how many and what remaining troops will do? Cause he has said a lot of things.

OP68: "We’re supporting a candidate who will provide access to health care for all who want it and monetary assistance to those who can’t pay for it alone." - BUT Edwards would tell you that Obama has not been bold enough for universal and that his plan means higher prices of everyone because the healthiest will think they don't need it -- and we will pay when they do need it. It is a stupid half-plan that will not change much about health care. Which should be no surprise since he carried the water for the health insurance industry who wanted a weaker universal bill in Illinois.

OP68 AMAZINGLY says: "Today, we’re supporting a candidate who wants to recognize full civil unions for LGBT couples, repeal the so-called “defense of marriage act,” and end “don’t ask, don’t tell”." BUT anyone in these communities will tell you that he gave a national platform to a homosexual-hater and -baiter when NO other Dem would have considered doing so.

OP68 said: "Today, we’re supporting a candidate who will create a “green” job corps," BUT he and HRC simply stole Edwards idea and actually HRC's plans are more concrete.

OP68 has yet to support a living wage, as OP68 has suggested.

He has not been the visionary leader when we wanted and needed when he came to the Senate, and more rhetoric gets us no where.

Obama is not and will not ever be an Edwards.

32. Edwards was my first choice. Obama is my choice out of who is running
I can't make you trust Obama if you don't, just like I couldn't make you trust Clinton if you don't. But all of the things I listed are things that he has publicly said he supports.

I believe that he is as good on climate change as any body else, excepting Al Gore and I trust what he'll do about Iraq more than any other candidate running.

And, the LGBT community is hardly unequivocal about who they support. Obama did use a bigot to get votes, which I think was insulting and stupid, but he has also voted against an anti gay amendment and sponsored hate crimes legislation in Illinois that includes sexual orientation and gender identity. Those actions make me inclined to believe what he says he supports in regard to LGBT issues despite using a bigot to get votes.

And Obama does support a living wage. And from now on, I WANT him to steal Edwards' ideas. Edwards has some really good ideas. That's why he was my first choice.
