Obama meme- He's an Arrogant uppity Black man with an attitude, aka, Threatening.
Edited on Thu Jan-31-08 03:02 PM by FrenchieCat
Barack Obama is a proud man....and as such, he doesn't have to bow his head down to anyone.
Just like Bill Clinton doesn't walk around with his eyes downcast, why should Obama?
Just like Denzel doesn't shuffle and 'em. Why should Obama?
Just like San Francisco Newsome gets respect, why should'nt Obama.

Get used to it America! Men should be men. And certainly a Black man should not have to choose to appear docile and tame in order to be deemed non threatening.

Those who are judging this man based on his demeanor and what they expect it should be, need to look in the mirror and figure out how they carry themselves. Maybe there are a lot of Uppity folks who think that they get to decide what a man's comportment should be.

Obama is running to become President of the United States.......he supposed to be serious and regal. That's how we should want them. He doesn't need to be goofy, or try extra hard to be perceived nice, or be someone who he is not like George Bush does. Part of Obama's appeal is his authenticity. He doesn't need an "attitude" adjustment. Get over the fact that he ain't smiling when he's talking about serious matters. Don't blame him if he's smart and articulate and understands that about himself. He didn't go into the corporate world and make a whole lot of money....so I believe that he cares about what he should care about, and that us and this country.

Remember this?

Good if you do, cause that is just a memory.
Those days are over.

1. I never stop to think about Obama's race, its not important to me
Im voting for him because he's the most exceptional candidate, with the most well thought out plans (available to read on his website Hillary supporters) I've ever seen since I first started voting back in 1976.

Thanks for your usual excellent post FrenchieCat.

3. But there are a lot of folks here who say.....yeah.....he's arrogant,
etc., etc., etc.....

They are starting to get on my damn nerves.

They should meet my husband....and then they'd really have something to talk about....cause that is one proud Black fine looking man that carries himself elegantly.

I'm just not sure if folks really understand the depth of their nerves!

55. Frenchiecat, I'm married to one of those men too.
A fine proud man who happens to be black. One who has had to stand and fight prejudice and mistreatment in the workplace, on the streets, and in the courts. One went to work every darned day in spite of being called names, having his work equipment tampered with, and having his physical safety put in jeopardy. He soldiered on for a period of three years in working conditions that would have made most people quit. He stood tall (and he's only about 5'8"), faced them, and he won. His fight for justice brought real change to the place where he worked. It is vastly different there now with new management and a conduct code which is now enforced.

He stood in front of a court after showing up for a court date after having been held for 3 days and never charged with anything. On a visit to his brother's house in another state, our car was tailended by a kid in a parking lot. We notified the cops so we could have a report for the insurance company. My husband was arrested and released after 3 days, with a notation that bond had been posted for him. We had posted none. In fact, the police would give neither one of us any information about why he was being detained. He showed up for the court date listed on the release form and the judge wanted to know why he was there. The attorney we had retained could not find a charge or a record of the case on the docket at all, but he and the attorney appeared. To this day, I think the cop in that suburb whose police department is notoriously rough on black men was trying to to sweep the streets that weekend and thought my husband would not come back since we were from out of state. The judge reprimanded the police department and the city and the judge apologized to him.

I've seen him time and time again stopped for nothing and let go. He drives the speed limit religiously and follows all traffic laws to the letter. He never drives after he drinks. This man is a hard worker with a decent soul, whose eyes will fill at the suffering of an other and will blaze with anger at injustice. He is proud and after watching him these many years we have been together, I can't imagine him carrying himself in any other way but with pride.

I've watched him and my son (from an earlier marriaged with ME man) both deal with prejudice and have seen the reactions of others to men of color as we've gone about our life.

Barack Obama has not reason to bow his head in deference. He has a right to his aspirations and is deserving of respect as a human being. It sickens me to see some of the comments I have read on these boards over the last several weeks because I know that some of the people making those statements have not one clue about the impediments to success that exist for minority groups in even this day and age.

65. Amen!
It is soooo disheartening to have folks do what they are doing, until it really does hurt.

But you know what?

At least we know what is in some hearts. At least we know.

Wouldn't have been good to continue not to have a clue of how "liberals" truly think.

71. There is a difference - a huge difference - between confidence and arrogance
Just like there's a difference between confident and cocky. You know it when you see it.

Why is that Obama supporters are always the ones to throw the "uppity" word out there? I've never used that term for Obama, and I've not seen a single instance where a critic of Obama called him "uppity." I grew up in the late 50s and 60s, and believe me, I know the connotation of that term. It goes hand in hand with another term I don't use, and I think everybody here knows that.

But it's always an Obama supporter who throws it out there. I wonder why that is.

9. That's right.....I said it.
It is called institutionalized racism.

If you don't think it fucking exist watch the tv for a minute while they divide all of the votes into Black and white and Latino votes.

In fact, that's about all that they are doing.

It is sick, and I don't like it.

62. Because mocking someone's personal appearance to belittle them
is not the same as objecting to someone's character traits.

It is possible to see someone as arrogant without criticizing them for being powerful, for reasons that have nothing to do with race.

You're not even subtle, either... remember how you never went back to visit that thread where you innocently wondered whether Edwards had any black friends during his childhood in the segregated south? After people proved you were full of shit? Good form. Speaks volumes.

I guess it's long past time I did it... but thanks for the reminder why I should.

It was the single most annoying thing for me before the primaries started. No one has ever been that far ahead in the polls and not ended up being president, they said. She's inevitable, they said. You might as well get on board now, they said.

Well, guess what. She has a fight on her hands. She has to earn it now. The horror.

I think that Obama is a smarmy guy, a smooth operator who is all talk and little substance. The type of fellow who likes to get ahead and jump over others at his job without having to really work hard for it. He relies more on his charm than the sweat of his brow to get ahead and I dislike people like that.

Furthermore, I would say the same thing if he were white, hispanic or purple with pink polka-dots. In other words, I don't give a damn if he's African-American, he still deserves scrutiny just like every other candidate.

that arrogant f**k. It's crap like this that makes me hope Bloomberg jumps in as a 3rd party candidate if Obama is the Dem nominee. These tactics totally disgust me. A few months ago I like all of our candidates. Now, not so much.

ed. for typo.

51. And I think that
Hillary is a lying chick, a smooth operator who is all talk and little substance. The type of gal who likes to get ahead and jump over others at her job without having to really work for it, but gets it by simply by being marrying to it. She relies more on her husbands' charm than the sweat off of her brow to get ahead and I dislike people like that.

Furthermore, I would say the same thing if she was a man. In other words, I don't give a damn that she's a woman and married to the former President....she still deserves scrutiny for her "ready from day one" 35 years bullshit just like every other candidate.

57. Bull, basically.
All politicians I ever met are arrogant self-centered types. Certainly the males.

Obama stands for next to nothing, except a chance to avoid the proven horror of another Clinton and another Bush until all time ends in 2020 or so.

If he gets the nom, I'm voting for him. One reason is because I know so many hidden racists will vote against him because he's black, and that gets me angry.

As for Clinton, it's true people will vote against her because she's a woman, yet I am certain just as many will vote for her because she's a woman. Women, in fact, are the majority. Both types of voters are wrong, insofar as they are ignoring that she is Hillary Clinton and therefore stands for something very clear (Clinton politics). They should be voting for or against her because she's Hillary Clinton.

Obama, conveniently, is whatever he pretends to be, lacking a record. Because that record is therefore better than the to me highly negative Clinton record, he has my very grudging support.

58. Wow, I'm sure glad Obama supporters don't play the race card. For the record
His arrogance has nothing to do with his color.

67. Where the hell did that come from?
The only criticisms I've seen here or anywhere remotely like that involve the fact that he looks arrogant at times- and perhaps a bit snide. So what?

So do a lot of other politicians- and a lot of other people I know IRL.

What does that have to do with being uppity?

75. Please stop. You're not helping Obama.
They're not treating him this way because he's black. They're treating him this way because they are the Clintons, and he is their opponent. Attack them because they trivialize, because they divert, because they appeal to sympathy, because they've become the beast they came to Washington to tame.

That Amos and Andy stuff is offensive, and your use of it to purportly represent for Obama is offensive.

Just how many of those speeches were written FOR him not BY him? :eyes:

I can't stand Obama mainly because he's a rethuglican corporatist in dem clothing!

So take that racism card and stick it where the sun don't shine! :grr:

Although I'm not sure how he fits into the discussion, and I'm so exasperated with DU race-baiting that I probably won't persevere in this thread to find out.

82. I wondered how people could hate John Kerry and love GW Bush
I came to realize that a lot of people saw Kerry's mannerisms and affectations as arrogant, while GW Bush was the guy they'd feel comfortable having a beer with.

They had it 180 degrees wrong, in the arrogance and authenticity department... but here we are.

Personally, I worry that Obama may actually have a hint of unneeded arrogance, or maybe just a touch of spite for the person standing in his way of accomplishing what is so possible for him to accomplish. And worry, just a tiny bit, if this foretells Obamas style in dealing with other perceived or real enemies in the future?

But I don't worry too much, because frankly, I like smart, competent people, with or without a beer.

What I DO worry much about, is if too many of the electorate will see him the way they saw the smart, competent John Kerry.

I love ya Frenchie, but I think you took a wrong turn down Race lane here. I've been heartened to see that generally, Americans of all colors are proving willing vote for a bi-racial man with the middle name of Hussein.

But now that they've proved that, I don't think you can chalk up irritation at perceived arrogance as race based. Americans have also proved that they are sensitive to (hypersensitive, imo) perceived hoity toity-ness.
