Place your trust in God by voting for Obama?
I support Obama, and at some level, I like that Democrats may be increasing their appeal to religious voters. But the column I've excerpted below shows the hatred of humankind that's typical of many branches of monotheism. "We know that trusting in men will fail us"??? Come on. I hope we're not turning into that kind of party. (You really need to read the whole thing, not just the four paragraphs I'm allowed to post, to get a full sense of the columnist's position.)

From The Massachusetts Daily Collegian:

Obama's familiar message
By: Eric Magazu

"I'm not talking about a budget deficit. I'm not talking about a trade deficit. I'm not talking about a deficit of good ideas or new plans. I'm talking about a moral deficit. I'm talking about an empathy deficit. I'm taking about an inability to recognize ourselves in one another." These are the words of Senator Barack Obama, from a speech given in Atlanta on Jan. 20, 2008.

Senator Obama, a true American patriot, speaks with hope and optimism of a more united America, an America where each of us sincerely cares for one another. He does this, uniquely among the presidential candidates, by speaking with a clear moral vision, and is not shy about referring to God or his Word in his speeches.

...

The ways of God become clear once our sunglasses are removed. His ways are not hard for us or far from us, but exist in our mouths and in our hearts. We see plainly that God does not treat us with justice, as we have thus far gotten away living our lives without punishment or repercussions for our actions. For this reason, we must place our trust in God's mercy, live new lives in the brightness that is redemption, and animate all of our relationships in perfect and unconditional charity. The only question that remains is how one can be assured of God's pardon.

This is the nature of love. Love is the only true path to make real the vision that is given to us by patriots like Senator Barack Obama. We cannot afford to place our trust in philosophers or scientists, nor in ministers or politicians. We know that trusting in men will fail us. We must place our trust in God, and become new people walking in His ways. This cause starts today and it starts with you, and you must live as if it depends on you alone.

3. We saw it on flyers placed on windshields in the church parking lot
---in support of GWB. I truly hope this is an isolated incident.

2. He's right, and yet in the same breath he's all wrong.
The Democratic party should be about returning to empathy, and cooperation, etc. A rejection of hate and greed and "every man for himself" that the GOP stands for.

But bringing religion into the discussion is all wrong-headed. It's perfectly practical to talk about empathy without resorting to talking about a god, that people may or may not believe in. There's a founding principle that too many people have forgotten. We can live together and have empathy for each other without bringing "god" into the public discourse. In fact, it works better that way. The Founding Fathers understood that over 200 years ago. But it looks like we're going to have to re-learn it all the hard way.

5. well said
There's a lot not to like about humanity, but there's a lot of good there, too. We could use a President who inspires us to solve our problems, not one who expects a god to save us all.

(And despite what this column says, I think Obama is much more the former than the latter.)

8. "All wrong headed," Love it! That helps me remember

that politicians' ties to religion can be used or misused. Unfortunately, we experienced the worst for 8 or 10 years now.

Actually, I don't think there *are* any gods. But this columnist sure does. At least he's on the Dems' side, anyway.
