That was both his gift and his downfall. He was trying to make things better for those who most needed it - those least likely to be able to support him with money, those who had the least amount of political and social clout, those least likely even to vote (those so hopeless they can no longer even be bothered to care), and so he simply didn't have the resources he needed. That's truly a cruel irony.
Not to say either Hillary or Obama won't make things better for everyone (I have absolute confidence that they will), but improving people's lot in life was Edwards' particular passion. Also not to say that Edwards appealed only to "the uneducated poor," or whatever nonsense is being spewed about him today (I may be "poor," but "uneducated," no), but he was the one most focused on the plight of those struggling simply to survive.
The same could be said about Kucinich, who just never gained the all-important visibility that would have let his message be heard. The picture is bleaker today without either of them in it.
