Just got the word today that the Senate HELP (Health, Education Labor and Pensions) Committee, of which Sen. Ted Kennedy is chairman, has ONCE AGAIN postponed the markup for the BCERA (Breast Cancer & Environmental Research Act) establishing research funding for scientists trying to establish links between breast cancer and environmental factors (diet, environmental pollutants, hormones in food, etc.)
This bill, first introduced in 1999, allocates $40 million per year for 3 years for competitive, peer-reviewed grants to scientists doing high quality research into what causes breast cancer, so we can learn how to prevent it. It has bipartisan support with 66 co-sponsors in the Senate and 261 in the House.
Sen. Harry Reid promised to make it a top priority in the Senate when he co-sponsored it as it was re-introduced. Its been sitting in Sen. Kennedy's HELP committee for the last year, with zero action taken on it. They've made promise after promise to mark it up and keep delaying and delaying it. The last promise was for a Feb 4 mark-up. Today they said it would be postponed again.
No more excuses, Dems lets get this done.
