Senator Kennedy Betrays Women by Not Standing For Hillary Clinton for President

http://www.nownys.org/pr_2008/pr_012808.html

Women have just experienced the ultimate betrayal. Senator Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard. Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, and the Family and Medical Leave Act to name a few. Women have buried their anger that his support for the compromises in No Child Left Behind and the Medicare bogus drug benefit brought us the passage of these flawed bills. We have thanked him for his ardent support of many civil rights bills, BUT women are always waiting in the wings.

And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not “this” one). “They” are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That’s Howard’s brother) who run DFA (that’s the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). "They" are Alternet, Progressive Democrats of America, democrats.com, Kucinich lovers and all the other groups that take women's money, say they’ll do feminist and women’s rights issues one of these days, and conveniently forget to mention women and children when they talk about poverty or human needs or America’s future.

This latest move by Kennedy, is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation- to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a President that is the first woman after centuries of men who “know what’s best for us.

14. And Michelle Obama
who betrayed us twice. First by marrying Barack Obama and having his children and then by not endorsing Hillary Clinton when her husband decided to betray America by running against a woman who had decided to be President.

11. This is absolute bullshit. The whole point about equality is that
you look at a candidate based on character and promise and ability - not gender. Shit, does that mean that if Paris Hilton was running I should vote for her just because she is a woman?

I will not vote for Hillary because I believe she is a conniving compromiser with no vision and I think, unelectable.

this is so stupid, IMO. He's not telling her she can't run - he's just telling her she not the best choice to lead us.

Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 12:06 PM by havocmom
is sexist.

edited to add:
Using the logic of the OP, the very fact that HRC is running against BHO is evidence of her betrayal of black voters and all men. Such foolishness! Also not the way to win friends and influence people.

17. this was the NY chapter, not nat'l headquarters
Salon has the story - after the NY office released this bit of bullshit, the National Office disagreed and instead celebrated that women can and do vote and run for office.

This sort of absolutist b.s. is N.O.W.'s worst enemy.

As a female, I suppose I'm betraying my gender to support someone other than Hillary too. Too bad this spokesperson in NY couldn't understand that women who are part of the social contract can form their opinions based upon the content of someone's policies, not the color of their skin or the gender in their underwear.

I think the person in the NY office who made that claim should be relieved of her duties because this is a major fuck up.

Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 12:07 PM by sparosnare
As a woman, I am embarrassed an organization I have always regarded with respect would issue such a vile hit piece (even if it's just the NY chapter).

I am SICK AND TIRED of being told I should vote for Hillary because she's a woman.

Hill because she is a woman.

lots of talk about a first woman prez. but actually saying 'vote for Hill because she is a woman'.

the NY NOW was talking about Kennedy.

24. As a woman and mother I am appalled by this BS! I will not donate to NOW until
they can select new leadership. We shouldn't choose a candidate based on gender anymore than we should choose a candidate based on race.

DID NOW CONSIDER THE FAMILIES WHO LOST THEIR JOBS OVERSEAS DUE TO NAFTA AND NOW MUST WORK 2 JOBS TO MAKE ENDS MEET?

DID NOW CONSIDER THE MOTHERS, WIVES AND CHILDREN OF THE FALLEN SOLDIERS IN PART THANKS TO CLINTON'S SUPPORT OF THE IWR AND OTHER BUSH FAVORING LEGISLATION?

DID NOW CONSIDER THE CHILDREN GOING TO SCHOOL NEAR THE WTI TOXIC WASTE INCINERATOR LOCATED ON A FLOOD PLAIN IN EAST LIVERPOOL OHIO? (Bill made broken campaign promises while Hillary, at the Rose law firm client/WTI/Bush/Clinton financier Jackson Stephens (GOOGLE THIS GUY!!!!)

WELL THIS WOMAN DID AND CAN SAY I WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR HER!

29. You are correct-here is national response to Sen Kennedy's endorsement:

NOW's Response to Sen. Kennedy's Endorsement

Statement of NOW President Kim Gandy

January 28, 2008

The National Organization for Women has enormous respect and admiration for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D- Mass.). For decades Sen. Kennedy has been a friend of NOW, and a leader and fighter for women's civil and reproductive rights, and his record shows that.

Though the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has proudly endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, we respect Sen. Kennedy's endorsement. We continue to encourage women everywhere to express their opinions and exercise their right to vote.

THAT SAID, THEY NEED TO REEL IN THE NY CHAPTER THAT IS DOING DAMAGE TO THE ORGANIZATION.

25. Okay everyone pick a side.
The irony is killing me.

Everyone's familiar with the Hobson's choice, right? Hobson was a farmer who ran a dude ranch. People would go to his farm on weekends for horseback riding. If you didn't like the horse that Hobson chose for you, you could go to the back of the line. The next person in line would get the same choice.

Here are your choices:
a) you hate minorities
b) you hate women

There is no "C".
