6. If you can't work for Kerry... work for Congress ... work for changing

the public discourse..

Find organizations that select for support congressional candidates that are progressive... such as the Progressive Majorit... or Bread for the World - or other such organizatons... want a more progressive democratic party... lets do it, then. Or work for getting more progressives elected locally and into the overall political pipeline.

Find organizations that not only create political pr efforts on issues of import (like MoveOn - that got tons of one on one discussions with various senators and congressman... it didn't work this time... but it pushed the dialogue so that the public perception about Iraq has shifted more quickly than on - say Vietnam... why? Because of the frequency of discussion in letters to the editor... even in letters written by repub senators (Hagel and Lugar) that gave voice to criticism... that now when things aren't going well... give more of the public memory hooks to tag onto to combat the propoganda that tries to reconvince them of what a noble and just cause the war was.)... efforts that get the public talking. We may not have the airwaves like limbaugh and company... but suddenly issues that were NOT talked about for a long time because limbaugh et al had reshaped public discourse...are back - such as health care (people are talking about the different forms - universal, single payer, etc. that was NOT happening a few years ago.) These efforts need to be long term, strategic and relentless.

Change the public discourse and ideas that once did not seem radical.. but today appear to be radical to the public ... will once again be discussed as mainstream.

There are many ways that folks can be very active, productive and help change the course politically... even if one can not fully get behind the Kerry candidacy.

indeed, I have my mixed feeling about Kerry... in congress he has both been a tenacious fighter... and one who is more cautious /using political calculus. Now when I think of what kind of President Kerry is with this current congress.. vs. what kind of President Kerry would be with a democratic majority congress.. (better - not having to stave off as much rightwing crap... but still having to rely heavily on the radical middle)... vs. what kind of President Kerry would be with a progressive-dominated democratic congress... (bet the fighter we saw and knew... would be back!) Thinking in those terms rather shifts my thinking quite a bit.

then don't bitch. If you vote anything other than Democratic, then feel free to, but if bush wins by a narrow margin, maybe you should look in the mirror and "ask why did I vote for candidate x?" I supported Senator Edwards in The Iowa caucuses, but am behind Kerry 100 pct. now. I guess its sort of like 2000, when Gore was not a good candidate, but most certainly better than bush. Anyway, if you are commited to ousting bush, vote Dem. in November, regardless of who you think may carry your state.

16. Well knowing how you think about the candiates CW, heres my advice

Here's what I would advise
Vote DK in your state primary, I know youre a supporter. For the GE, I personally would vote Kerry but knowing how you live in a state that is very republican and youre no fan of Kerry, I would vote for a third party candiate of your choice, preferably Brown, he seems preferable to Nader IMO. Either way if you go third party, I wont howl and complain, its your vote not mine.
