Poll question: Who do you support for VP?
Edited on Wed Mar-03-04 06:30 AM by JCMach1
The nomination is all but done... it's time to see who DU supports for VP...

the question before you is Kerry and ???

This would also be a good place to discuss the reasoning behind your choice.

Any other DARK HORSES out there?

1. Whoever voted for Howard Dean needs some brain examination
Or to read any decent book on modern electoral politics

2. Even as a former Dean supporter, I feel that Kerry/Dean
Would be an unbalanced ticket (no pun intended)

3. BTW you should edit your poll to replace Harold Ford with someone
who is constitutionally legal to be vice president.

7. It would also put NC in play with a very interesting Senate race
running as well.

I believe the Dem. ticket would take NC.

As far as a dark horse, how about Mary Landrieu?

10. Would love to see Wesley Clark on the ticket, but
wonder if he would play second fiddle. Of course, he has been doing some stumping for Kerry of late.

12. Wesley Clark would probably be the best choice
He could help a lot in Arkansas and possibly a few other southern/border states. Plus he'd tower over chickenhawk Cheney in the debate -- both literally and figuratively.

And nobody except the lunatic freepers would even dream of questioning the foreign policy credentials of a Kerry/Clark ticket. As an added bonus, Clark is young enough to be a viable successor in 2012 should Kerry be elected this fall.

14. Hell no on Hillary
Why give the Freepers what they want?

I like the Clintons, don't get me wrong, but Hillary on the ticket does Kerry no good, and it brings down the ticket. Plus, terrible geographic balance (if you beleive HC is a New Yorker).

Wesley Clark as a VP candidate would scare the hell out of the Repugs. Edwards wouldn't be bad, either.

15. The Nation chimes in
Now that it looks like we've got our presidential matchup, The Nation has kicked off a renewed discussion about who Kerry might pick to run as his vice-president, suggesting:

But, if Kerry is as smart as he has proven to be so far in this campaign, he won't play the old game of picking a running mate who might – emphasis on "might" -- help him carry a particular battleground state. Rather, he will follow the lead of Carter in 1976 and Bill Clinton in 1992 and pick a vice presidential prospect who helps to energize the party's base voters nationally, and who add ideas and energy to a ticket that will be needing more of both those commodities.

Among the people Kerry might consider are:

* New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, the single most effective battler against corporate abuses in either political party. Spitzer has been a watchdog on Wall Street and a fearless advocate for consumers. He's also got a great track record as a defender of women's rights. Spitzer's smart, he's quick on his feet and he already has achieveda stature that extends well beyond New York's borders.

* Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, the sole opponent in the Senate to the Patriot Act and the most prominent Democratic advocate for campaign finance reform. Feingold's got a far better record than Kerry on issues of concern to working Americans and farmers, meaning that he could be a particularly effective advocate for the ticket in the swing states of theGreat Lakes and the upper Midwest.

* Texas Representative Lloyd Doggett, one of the savviest and most effective members of the current Congress. He's a former state Supreme Court Justice with a great legal mind. And wouldn't it be interesting to hear a Texas-accented voice explaining the folly of the war with Iraq, the Patriot Act and other Bush initiatives?

Let the veepstakes begin (again)!

16. Some good choices there
But I'd scratch off Feingold. As great a VP candidate as he would no doubt be, he is running for re-election for his senate seat, and I'd hate to see him pull a Lieberman and run for both. That would hurt his credibility, and the GOP will get pretty tough with him in Wisconsin. Otherwise, he'd be near the top of my list.

17. For awhile I have been thinking towards the ROLE of veep
highly political - working with Congress. When not looking at the role as candidate - I have been scouring my mind for who could out cheney, cheney (so to speak) in working/wrestling with Congress.

This article points out a strength of Doggett... and he also fits my image of effective Veep (in the position.)

That might just be an extrodinary choice. Both for the campaigning, and for the actual administration when they win.

22. It may be obvious to you, but not the media.
Ive seen several speculations, and they dont even mention Clark. The media blackout continues. Edwards has kissed Kerry's ass unmercifully these past few weeks. More than hearing Edward's platform, I constantly heard him say, "I agree with Senator Kerry", especially in Sunday's debate. That's not what we need. We need Wes Clark. The foreign policy expertise AND the southern charm! You also have to give it up for the salivating-at-the-mouth oppurtunity of a Clark - Cheney debate. I mean that is what the rethugs really fear. Can you imagine how delicious it would be to see Cheney squirm under Clark's clearly superior intellect? It would be like when The One Ring finally melted into the fire of Mount Doom. The shockwave, the beginning of a new age of tolerance and enlightenment.
IMHO anyway

24. And for the most part the media ignores him...
Last night he was mentioned rarely by the pundits. It is as if the ignore Clark ritual continues. Clark is the best choice--from the south, appeal to independents and moderate republicans, capable and has a real sense of duty and honor. If national security is the major issue a Kerry/clark ticket would be the dream team. With Wes being so smart and capable on economics--an attribute most often ignored by the media--he would be a great asset.

The sense of duty, honor, and loyalty should reassure those worried about Clark being a good running mate. It grieves me that the Kerry team may pass Wes up.

23. Anybody for Bill Richardson?
He's done a lot for the state of New Mexico, and could bring in a significant chunk of the Hispanic vote. He's also got his admin credentials (I always like to see a Senator balanced by a governor. They bring different things to the party.)
