Women's group slams Kennedy for 'betrayal'
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy is under heavy fire from a state chapter of the National Organization for Women for his decision to back Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton.

In a sharply critical statement, the New York state chapter of NOW took aim at Kennedy Monday for what it called an "ultimate betrayal," and suggested the Massachusetts Democrat "can't or won't" handle the idea of Clinton becoming President of the United States.

"Sen. Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard," said the statement. "Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few."

"And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment!" the statement continues. "He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton."

1. That was a disgusting piece of editorialized smut. NOW should be ashamed.
We women are entitled to our own opinions and our own vote and just because Hillary is a woman does NOT mean that she is the most qualified or best candidate for the issues we face today. I wish she was, but she's not.

NOW's Response to Sen. Kennedy's Endorsement

Statement of NOW President Kim Gandy

January 28, 2008

The National Organization for Women has enormous respect and admiration for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D- Mass.). For decades Sen. Kennedy has been a friend of NOW, and a leader and fighter for women's civil and reproductive rights, and his record shows that.

Though the National Organization for Women Political Action Committee has proudly endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, we respect Sen. Kennedy's endorsement. We continue to encourage women everywhere to express their opinions and exercise their right to vote.

44. Because, if they're right, what are you?
I understand. Women's rights are not a priority for you. There's the war, the economy, hope for mankind. Proving you're not a racist.

Lotta big priorities that take precedence.

It's a good thing that you ally yourself with the people who call women "old bats."

Keep that hope and faith, you hear?

109. cuz the war, the economy and hope for mankind don't way much against
ONE woman's right to be president. Emphasis on ONE.

Millions of women and children (and yes, even those slimy creatures known as men) are effected by those "big priorities" which you diminish.

Which is more important to women, the symbolic change of having one of their own in office or the actual change of an improvement in their lives.

I'm not saying that we have to choose, neither am I saying that we won't, but it seems to me that if you had to make the choice you would choose the former.

It seems to me that this OP represents the thinking that Hillary's individual achievement is a stand in for the advancement of ALL people toward equality.

133. And is Obama against women's rights?
And Clinton should be favored and elected only on account of her gender? That is exactly what you're saying, you realize? That Ted Kennedy should give his support to Clinton not because of her positions, her record, her achievements and her abilities, but because of her gender, and her gender alone.

What a fucking odd position for someone to take and then call someone else sexist.

3. The important words are "... who is Hillary Clinton"
I am all in favor of a woman becoming president. Barbara Boxer would suit me fine. Even Jane Harman strikes me as a take-charge, strong-on-national-defense figure. As a feminist, I find it somewhat insulting that the first serious woman candidate for President had to serve a term as First Lady to earn that very viability. I'm ready for a woman -- just not THAT woman.

14. And yet they have not attempted it.
So you are very safe in knowing that push will never come to shove.

I honor the one with the guts to DO it. To put up with the unending spew, the self-righteous vilification of a woman who has worked hard her entire adult life for the betterment of women and children in this country.

Be comfortable. You will never have to put your money where your mouth is for the women you deem acceptable. (As long as they're not running.)Not after this.

But you've named women you would vote for as president. So you don't have to feel like a complete hypocrite. Just as you don't have to vote for Barbara Boxer if you don't choose to.

39. Right, Barbara Boxer would be a great 2nd for 2008
I can see that now.

I too think it's incredibly sexist for any female to suggest I as a woman should support someone for President of the United States because of her gender. I just really can't get over it. To me the decision rests on the issues, and I do not agree with Hillary's positions on several things. It's been this way since she became a "professional politician." I have said for at least two years I would not vote for her if she ran for POTUS, and for someone to suggest I should do just that is incredible.

Barbara Boxer I would strongly support as Obama's running mate because she has put herself out there when other Dems refused to do so. I also find myself agreeing with her often when she makes public statements on various issues. I am totally in sync with Barbara Boxer, and I would wholeheartedly support her.

I enjoyed your excellent expression of what I feel. Thanks for putting my thoughts into words.

And I am sick of being told that I "hate fellow GLBT"ers or am not a "real woman" because I support Obama instead of Hillary. As far as I am concerned, I have a hard time supporting the people who put us into Iraq... but I believe in forgiveness and saying you messed up. What I CANNOT support is ANYONE who says that torture is OK in ANY circumstance!

I like Obama-Boxer! That is an awesome idea! I could really support that ticket.

I'm sure at times he is.. his failing comes from listening to a woman, his niece, Caroline
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 09:00 PM by Tellurian
She has been bending his ear..because her children whined about Obama. "He's just like Grandpa." "He says, all the same things Grandpa did". Teddy has been pressured and unknowingly duped by his niece and her children..it says so right in the endorsement video, when Caroline speaks.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22873162/

And I'll go further to say, if John JR had been alive, he NEVER would have been duped by this 'media creation'. Anybody here think Caroline or her kids bear an iota of "street sense"? Caroline and now I'm guessing Ethel, have succumbed to the same pressure from their college age kids and grand kids... 'The Obama Myth'..a Grimm Fairytale!

Just look at the comments around here on any given day. Sexism is celebrated and cheered on.

35. The USA, among Western industrialised countries, remains backward in this respect, as...
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 08:54 PM by libbygurl
...so many other Western countries have had no problem electing women to positions of leadership (UK, Canada, Germany, to name a few, and Segolene Royal nearly won the presidency in France vs. Sarkozy).

Of course, in many Asian and African countries, women have become their nation's leaders with much less fuss than here, and have become so decades earlier!

91. Salary gaps?
Here's a list of 39 jobs where women make more than men:

http://money.cnn.com/2006/02/28/commentary/everyday/sahadi_paytable/index.htm

Salary gaps. :eyes:

If it were really try that you could routinely pay women — what is the "accepted figure" these days? 70%? — 70% of what men are paid, why the hell would anyone hire men? With "downsizing" and "outsourcing" the buzzwords of business for the last few decades, what company wouldn't jump at the opportunity to slash its salary budget by a whopping 30%.

I know, I know. Math is hard.

When you can't throw out unsupported claims and have them accepted, you attack.

If this is so "true", why don't you have DATA to back it up? What you are just spouting off is the same crap that has been repeated, and proven FALSE, since like, I dunno... the sixties? Don't you have an actual argument, backed with actual claims? Or just name calling?

You should change your screen-name, as you aren't really into the peace, are you?

This is such BS... if there was a gender gap in pay for the same job GET A LAWYER.

THAT IS ILLEGAL. SUE the company.

Can't sue? Maybe it's because you have less education, less qualifications, or a different job that the man who is getting paid the "thirty cents more per dollar". You can't have a different job and expect to get paid the same. Geeez. Is that hard to figure out?

And once again: How are YOU a second class citizen?

BLACKS and HISPANICS were a second class... which means they faced de facto and de jure discrimination, and are still overcoming that. I don't see that happening to women today in America - except in the minds of Feminists and Women's Studies majors.

Seems like they nailed Teddy pretty well.

Frankly, I was blaming Ted's staff two weeks ago for inadequate or incorrect briefings. Now I realize this endorsement was in the works for awhile so his call to Bill, and the interviews he gave about same, and the Obama camp's comments to the press were all part of a larger strategy.

I had forgotten half of Ted's baggage with regard to women. It is the 21st century and I assumed he had grown a little - guess not.

He is just one more old white guy who continues to have a problem with strong women. Oh the U.S. Senate - the final firewall protecting white male privilege.

The newest endorsements she has received from Florida speak volumes, such as Janet Reno, Senator Bill Nelson, and even the Mayor of Miami - - I was surprised and please by this.

Tomorrow sunshine rules for Hillary.

She is far superior to the combination of Obama and Kennedy in her accomplishments, her dedication, her drive, and all the qualities of her character that make her an extraordinary woman that history will be so proud of.

86. As a woman, I am offended by NOW's statement
for a number of reasons. But let's just look at the hypocrisy of one:

"Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few." So NOW says.

Notice the one thing they didn't mention was Chappaquiddick.

Not to be obtuse or snarky here, but wasn't that a WOMAN who died in that car, and didn't NOW give Teddy a pass on that? Stuck up for him, stood by him, apologized for him, etc...

Where was NOW then?????????????????????

Don't get me wrong, I have much love for Ted Kennedy and the many good things he's done. But let's be honest, he's made some horrible mistakes, too. And women who were unconcerned about the death of Mary Jo Kopechne back then are the same women who now cry betrayal that their man, Ted Kennedy, has supposedly abandoned them.

My point being - this announcement from NOW reeks of sour grapes and not getting the political favor they expected in return for covering Teddy's butt all these years. This attack on Kennedy is not about who is the best candidate for women's issues and women's rights - it's about "Who's Your Mama, Teddy?"

And jump in the lake, permanently.

If women want or need a Presidential candidate here is my rec':

Barbara Boxer.
For her awareness and her bravery in signing on with the Black Caucus in the Senate, post election 2004, and then her refusing to vote for the certification of the election that put Bush into office for the second time.

Hillary was too busy ensuring that the 2004 election not be investigated or invalidated to stand with Boxer.

And for that reason alone she has no support from me.

Does it occur to these women that Kennedy like many white women see a great leader in Obama and that it matters not the gender or race of the candidate but the substance.

"He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton." Christ he said he would support her if she is the candidate which is more than I can say and I am a white woman. I can certainly handle the prospect of a woman president -- who is not Hillary Clinton.
