Poll question: Who should be John Kerry's running mate?
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 11:05 PM by WillyBrandt
I'm divided between Wesley Clark and John Edwards.

Clark gives us a ton of medals in the ticket, and full reign to mock the chickenhawks ("Fonda" doesn't work as well when you have TWO war heros.) He'd be very helpful on his own terms, and is more than able to be a worthy Vice President. He's downsides seem to be: (1) hasn't been in the media very recently; (2) he likely is too old to be a Presidential candidate after Kerry's second term.

Edwards is a rising star, who with a bit more experience would be a perfect candidate, though he is slightly too conservative for my tastes. The thing with Edwards, we actually have data showing Kerry/Edwards winning by 50-42, which while not definite, is certainly enticing. On the other hand, it's not clear that Edwards is needed for a united Party. I suspect that will happen with any decent VP pick.

I vote Clark: I think it's a more powerful ticket overall.

Please suggest more, and I'll add them.

1. How old is Harold Ford?
Edited on Tue Mar-02-04 10:54 PM by RedSox02
The Congressman from Tennessee. I am not saying he would accept being a VP right now, and he probably isn't going to inspire the progressive base of the Dems, but that guy would be a great VP candidate I think from the standpoint of being a well spoken black Southern Democrat. He would scare the daylights out of the GOP. Of course I am not sure if he is even old enough.

4. Gephardt and Bob Graham have been mentioned as VP
Your poll is biased. Historically nominees seldom select a primary competitor as a running mate. There have been some notable exceptions: President Kennedy picked LBJ, Reagan picked Poppy Bush.

6. At the bottom, I asked for further suggestions.
Which I accept, regardless of whether they come with a side of snark.

5. Harold Ford isn't old enough , Constitution prevents it
Harold Ford wont be old enough to be vp this year because of the constitution. i'm betting he runs for bill frists seat when bill frist's term is over and he runs for president. and if he wins the senate seat , a few years after he can run straight for president. he has years ahead of him.

7. Voted Clark
just had too, but Edwards would be excellent.

I'd like to see one of these scenarios:

President Kerry
Vice President Clark
Attorney General Edwards

OR

President Kerry
Vice President Edwards
Secretary of State Clark

:)

8. Fuck. I'm glad I don't habve to make that choice. I'm right on the line.
Edwards: Injects ticket with needed charisma booster. Will make Ol' Dick look like Dad's grim golfing buddy in debates. Two America's shtick will resonate big time with needed constituancy groups in GE.

Clark: Arkansas. Put's final nail in Chimp's foreign policy "advantage" coffin. Immune to ol' Dick's likely "experience" attack in debates. Gives swing voters an excuse to vote Dem. did I mention Arkansas?

10. Why not Kerry/Kerrey?
Bob Kerrey's got a Congressional Medal of Honor...

I doubt Edwards will be on the ticket; I don't think Kerry likes him very much, and there are other reasons.

12. Also, bad because of Kerrey's possible war crimes
he pretty much has admitted to dispatching innocent women and children in that SNAFU/FUBAR night raid.

13. Wesley K. Clark
I always vote for Clark, I think he'd be a great VP and could step right in as President if necessary.

Bush and Reagan were at each other's throats, but they still came together and the end and won.

Heck, I can dream.

16. Although a Clark supporter,
I think Edwards is the best choice. Clark should have a cabinet position (Sec State), better for him and better for the ticket.

There are other worthy individuals but in this election I think that giving prominent positions to other candidates is a particularly good idea. Clark and Edwards top this list. Personally, I would like to see all the serious candidates figure in Kerry's administration. However this would be unprecedented, I think.

Sorry, Clark people, but I would like to see the General in a position to do something, not just to have some vague "President in waiting" role.
