1. Utah? Cool!
Isn't Utah one of the states that Ross Perot came in 2nd in 1992?

3. For some reason, I find that cool
I like to see things shaken up like that once in awhile. After all, we even elected a third party governor in MN a few yaers back (I believe we were all very drunk at the time).

5. Eh, Utah used to be a pretty moderate state.
Utah had a Democrat as governor up until 1980 for 42 of 50 years. Then things began to change with the Reagan revolution and ultimately turned Utah into a right of center state into a far-right state that gave Bush is largest victory in '04.

8. Isn't that bizarre how that happens?
The liberal/libertarian individualistic streak gets mutated into this arch-conservative "get government off my back" rightwing hokum. I never quite understood how that worked, but it seems like it happened a lot in so many western states.

Minnesota's gone that way in many ways, too. Nominally we're pretty blue, but we've been really purple lately. There's some weird conservative streak that's come out since Reagan. Our congressional delegation has been 50/50 Dem/GOP for most of the past 20 years, and we haven't had a Democratic governor since 1990. Our current governor is down in Florida this weekend campaigning with John McCain, and is supposedly on his short list of possible VP nominees.

I have a feeling 2008 will be a good year overall for us. The GOP has screwed things up so badly that not even Karl Rove can convince people otherwise.

9. I just don't see Utah going back.
Who knows, though, I'm guess Republicans wondered when they would win the governor's manchion again and they've been in control for quite a long time.

Utah's last Democratic senator was Frank Moss, who lost to Orrin Hatch in the 70s. We do have a Democrat in the House, but he's right of center on most issues.
