and it is not fair to the winning candidates
to have him hang on and siphon votes.

They won fair and square, he needs to bow out
before he loses our respect.

94. And it won't be won with Edwards as the
candidate, not even Dems are voting for him. If he had a chance, he'd be winning some of the primaries and he'd have won more of them in 2004. I agree with a lot of his message, he just has no chance.

127. The british posters I use to debate against called it dribble.
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 09:10 AM by The Backlash Cometh
I "met" them on an open british newsgroup pre-9/11 and the resident iconoclast socialists were constantly being attacked by the Tories, which seemed higher in number. The only people who the Tories liked making fun of more was us "undereducated" Merkins. They really had an easy job of putting us down. It took about a year for us to season, and learn how to debate properly, and then we had us some good fightin'. We were like divorced spouses.

God, I miss those days. But, 9/11 changed everything. Us left-leaning Americans didn't seem to have the heart to stick around for light banter anymore. There were bigger mysteries to unravel.

The brits were mostly retired gents with a penchant for cooking, and one astute Californian commented something to the effect that they were tired nuts, with tired nuts, talking about recipes with tired nuts.

out here in the states that have not yet had a primary don't matter to those of you whose candidate has done well so far? I don't think so. Perhaps some of you should chill your jets and give the rest of us a chance to speak out in the voting booth? You make some big assumptions.

122. Damn straight
and I know my candidate is doing a lot to center the two churlish candidates on to THE ISSUES which is what I want to hear, not who can sling the most crap pie! For that matter, I wish the celebrities jumping on bandwagons and doing anything other than maybe playing a rally would just quit it too. They are using their fame unwisely to influence. In this media-driven society, their word is weightier than it ought to be!

119. Siphoning votes? Hardly!
If Edwards voters wanted to vote for another candidate, they would. I assure you that no one is holding a gun to the heads of Edwards voters. In the GE we will vote for anyone who is the nominee, but we prefer it be him, we want it to be him, and in the interim, there's an added gift: he's explaining to the nation what no one wants to explain to them: that corporations have torn this country into pieces.

12. maybe he can be Secretary of Labor or something.
He doesn't have a job, has not had one since he lost his senate seat.

I am fairly certain he would have a cabinet position in an Obama administration. I am not so sure about a Clinton one.

The Clinton's still have people they owe favors to from the Bill years. Also the "lobbyist" issue is one that they disagree on and I can't see either one moving toward the other.

101. ???
So those 30% in Iowa, 15% in New Hampshire, and 18% in South Carolina don't count? I guess you are pushing the same idea as the Democratic Party...ignore the progressives and liberals who actually make up the base. They will vote for the nominee, we don't need to work for their vote...right?
But I guess you are technically correct...I am not a Democrat, they are too centrist for me. Go ahead and ignore the people who are the natural base of the party and we will get another Ralph Nader for you go scapegoat about for years.

120. Here's my problem with that thinking:
First, there are still plenty of states left. Stranger things have happened than that a candidate that was 3rd, should win the nomination.
Second, his message is being listened to and that, to me, is more important than a million other thing.

96. He has no chance in the general election, frankly.
Maybe you can be a bit nicer or something. Telling people to shut up is pretty juvenile. Edwards has NOT had a job since 2004. I think he'd make a fantastic Attorney General or Secretary of Labor. We'd finally have a Labor Department that actually gave a damn about WORKERS instead of corporations first, last and always.

jump up and down and demand it. If you are too childish and juvenile to make a point and argue your point without resorting to such infantile crap as "shut up", then don't expect people to listen to your point of view and/or argument. You are doing your candidate no favors by doing so.

100. Yes, I'm talkin' 'bout democracy man!
Can we dig it?!

Please use the slogan if you think it will help! Since you mentioned it, I agree that it is a good idea. I will introduce it to the campaign website discussion thread, anyone else please do so if you like it. Who needs big-wig, Washington insider endorsements for someone who is campaigning for the people?

How about this one? "JOHN EDWARDS AND THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA ENDORSE DEMOCRACY!"

Use it up! Any more ideas?

do they have to remain committed to that candidate at the convention. It is my understanding that they are at the convention in order to help if it is a brokered convention. Can they override a clear majority?

72. the primary as it stands
where Edwards is beginning to be seen as the "spoiler" by both the other candidates(but who gains the most if he simply bows out prematurely?) AND by a a bumbling, split and fairly awkward(God bless them) party leadership.

This may very well be a JFK type of year where the voters are trapped in a naivete but an overwhelming instinct for change- with no incumbency shrewd Dick Nixon riding gravitas in a dull time toward continuity. I see a lot of the positioning and mistakes and glorious effectiveness of pure charisma in this analogy. The clever awkwardness of JFK dealing with his religion, beefing up the Cold Warrior image with the dangerous missile gap talk which sent Ike over the wall, realizing that no matter who won the military industrial complex would rule even military common sense. In any event, a critical difference is the total crap the GOP has created and the pressure of facts under the lid much greater than even the instinctual perception of the masses. And the economy tanks big time which is not the third rail but the oncoming train itself about to run over the party in power.

Edwards has not lost. The others have powered through a few odd contests and have attained the perception of momentum. In that momentum as in 2004, edwards may be derailed, eventually, but this time there are two, count them, two powerful campaigns on a collision course. The normal options are these: one or the others crushes the other and attains enough delegates, neither gains enough but Edwards has more than enough to broker a more progressive platform not as a McGovern but more of a Dr. dean to give the party the shot forward it needs so desperately, or the long shot collapse of one or both candidates paving the way for Edwards to break through. In none of those scenarios does it even make any sense for edwards to drop out.

It only makes sense in the pocket calculators of campaign managers of the other campaigns who in divvying up the edwards likely voters see and advantage here and there in the shallow contest aspect that so far has frozen out those voters and Edwards and DK and others. Screw them all. There are plenty of liberals now rallying in ORGANIZED progression for Obama to stop the worst from happening in the fall, showing their rebellion against the method and substance of the loosely described "DLC" do-nothing wing which has so frustrated the various elements of the most liberal wing(traditional liberals, progressives, the Black Caucus) and is responsible in large part for hobbling past campaigns into vulnerability.

Edwards is still very much a vital voice for party members where it counts. If there is a further element of whether he might be a vital component of a "stop Hillary" or "stop the party wounding" argument, we will have to hear those cases after Super Tuesday. The RFK effect, in essence a challenge to the very powers of destruction themselves, ALSO continues and maybe be heard with each vote we cast to empower it. Morally and in the long run it is the necessary right thing to do and politically it is not all merely destructive and hopeless. At this moment it reflects, unfortunately or not, the percentage of aware populations for the most pointed change and reforms, which is not enough to win so long as the lid stays on the knowledge bomb and maybe not even after it comes off.

I want both my Kennedys to continue so by both prongs the DLC disaster is brought to an end and the fall is made all the stronger for it. That is this moment. Things might look different after the next round of primaries but as for chunks of real delegates and percentages all three possibilities and what Edwards stands for and for whom make it his duty to stay in.

A much more moral case could be made, though it is humanly impossible for any candidate I have ever known to act on it at this moment, is that the Clintons are eating their rationale and their likelihood of winning in the fall alive at great peril to everything far beyond mere party success- which is suffering stark attrition in the ripples in the shallow pool. While the handwriting is on the wall, still it is too soon to make that case until the real large voting coming up.

I wouldn't worry about any media memes or pressure from the other two camps. There is probably no worst case scenario where Edwards enables Hillary to gain anymore percentage than she would or Obama any less
that he couldn't give back again as a force for the progressive agenda. Should one or the other prove themselves obviously unfit for November, even if that one is slightly ahead in delegates, or the fluff-upped agenda platform, this is EXACTLY the principled well reasoned check in this starry eyed hoopla on the brink of world crisis we would like to have in place for the common man to be kingmaker.

In the best case scenario- realistically unlikely in my experience unless something truly unprecedented happens- Edwards might even win. So start the begging. Knee pads and all. It is nice to be appreciated.
