What about an Obama/Edwards ticket?
Assuming, of course, that Obama is the Democratic nominee?

12. Yep
You can't expect a Southerner in the VP slot to deliver a Southern state when the guy at the top of the ticket has so very little appeal to people in the South.

16. Edwards didn't deliver a single southern state in '04.
Not even his home state of NC. His primary performance in SC doesn't bode well for him as a running mate, either. I don't know, maybe white male Democrats will turn out to vote for him, but if they did it sure didn't help him much in SC.

2. Doubtful...
Not necessarily a bad pairing, but I don't think Edwards will go for a VP slot again after 2004.

Powerful position - when it comes to fruition. :patriot:

27. well, it is a job and he's looking for one...but not the VP one.
I think he was an ok Senator and should have
stayed in the Senate where he might be doing
a good job.

7. very unlikely
A half-term senator and a one-term senator isn't a good match. And Edwards didn't add anything last time, plus he's made pretty clear he doesn't want the job.

10. Powerful.
Their messages compliment each other very well. They match in a way that Kerry and Edwards never did. Obama wouldn't have to worry about being constantly outshined by Edwards at campaign events like Kerry did. They would probably win a Southern state or two.

But if Edwards stays in the race much longer without a big victory his reputation in the party will be destroyed forever.

24. No, never, and you don't understand Edwards
Edwards is not doing this for his ego, like the other two. He is doing this for US, the poor, invisible, forgotten people. Politics is not his life or career. Undoing poverty is his life's career. He has now become our lawyer, fighting the big corps over their abuse of us. Because our voices are never heard, he is making them heard like no other politician has done in decades. He will not step down and take second chair to someone who doesn't care about us. And, neither Obama or Clinton cares at all what happens to us, because we don't have money.

25. I look at the record and see that Obama
started out knocking on doors in poor neighborhoods to help organize people to improve their community. I see that Obama is the one who sacrificed making more money to be a civil rights attorney. I see Obama's record in Illinois standing up for the poor.

Don't pretend that Edwards is the only one standing up for the poor. In fact, he isn't even the one with the best record of doing so.

28. There is a big difference in observing the poor
and being poor. He became a civil rights attorney for one reason only, to become a politician. Yeah, he majored in poly sci in Columbia. "Working for the poor" looks good on your resume when you want to become President. He was always above it all, he went home to a wife that was making good money, he never lived it. The poor were his stepping stone, and I have no doubt that if he ever got into the White House, he'd use us again.

Edwards on the other hand, did. And, if it wasn't HIS family that was struggling at the time, it was his friends family. He saw if up close and personal. He had no intention of being a politician in college. In fact, his first degree is in textiles, yeah THAT was his major not poly sci. He only went to law school when he had the confidence enough to know that he could make it to his dream.

Obama is a great speaker when he has a prepared speech, but is nothing when you take that speech away. I am an issues person, and his issues are as light weight as he is.

29. You must have known Obama personally
since you have such deep insights into what he was thinking 20 years ago.

Your argument amazes me. Obama lived and worked in poor neighborhoods. He didn't just see them during meetings in his law office and in the court room. You really think Obama didn't have poor friends while living on the South side of Chicago or when he represented a very economically mixed Senate district? Come on. Edwards was wearing suits in the court room while Obama was fighting battles hand in hand with the poor in their own communities. Obama got his hands dirty.

So Edwards never thought he would be a politician. He just thought about becoming rich as a lawyer then? Am I supposed to be impressed by that?

I'm an issues guy too. I like a candidate whose voting record matches what they say on the campaign trail. I'm not so easily impressed by a stump speech from a guy who completely remade himself.
