19. Not exactly
I got the impression it would be soon. Suzaanne Malveaux (sp) was the reporter. She's down in Alabama.

You know how Blitzer is. He just said that they would be waiting for the announcement soon.

So the Kennedy machine could help Obama even outside Massachusetts. I just saw that ABC is reporting this endorsement will happen tomorrow in Washington.

84. Maybe he knew the SCOTUS was stacked against him ...
the case was perhaps not as obvious as the theft of Florida in 2000, and even that lead the SCOTUS to give Chimpy the keys to 1600 PA Ave.

While I too wish Kerry would've fought, I have to believe in his sincerity that he thought it best for the country if he did not. The man's a hero and a partiot, regardless of what the swiftdicks (lying MFers) have to say about him.

85. That IS a good point. I just wish people would just maybe ask Us whether
we think it too damaging or not instead of ONLY taking the counsel of "subject matter experts", then even if they do go with the SMEs at least we could know that we had somekind of hearing, some kind of voice in what is at stake.

People rise to the expectations you project upon them. Treat them as ignorant children and that's what you get.

for its true anti-War members, hence, it picked Obama in the first place, so that they would have both ends of what was the main-issue-spectrum covered: HC = Pro-War and BO = "anti"-this-War. Believe it or not BC does know what he's talking about; BO got on record, but otherwise kept his powder dry re the Invasion of Iraq, just so there'd be a place for the real anti-War Democrats to go, depending upon how the primaries worked out.

and cross over Republicans. I think BO cakewalks to the White House due to his strong support among these groups. If McCain is the nominee, Hillary has a rough time.

"Cakewalk" causes People (those who aren't blind followers anyway) to walk away from being taken for granted and when they do walk away because they are being taken for granted, they don't GO to the ones who are taking them for granted.

62. Not true - it was because Kennedy was able to work with Republlicans that he got things done
Read how Kennedy got S-Chip through a Republican dominated (55-45) Senate by identifying a group of Republicans who liked the idea of taxing cigarettes to fund children's health care. He worked with Orrin Hatch to make the changes to a bill he and Kerry had that couldn't be passed as it was. (Kerry stayed involved as a co-sponsor. Dodd was another.) The changes converted it from being an entitlement to needing to be reconfirmed in 5 years and to giving states the right to design their own plan. It was not as good as the original - but it was the biggest increase in federal medical insurance since medicaid.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, but Ted's last big adventure in bipartisanship was No Child Left Behind, wherein he got the royal screw job from the Reknucklians. The phrase 'unfunded mandate' comes to mind.

69. Kennedy will firm up the liberals
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 01:22 PM by karynnj
Carter may be a good man, but I don't think he has much if any leverage - I know his reputation in the Jewish community is mixed at best , in spite of the Camp David Accords.

What Kennedy does is increase the outlines of the coalition behind Obama - including many of the most conservative - but not necessarily DLC Senators and the most liberal (Kennedy, Leahy, and Kerry). What if he also gets the Montana Governor, Webb and Tester to augment the conservative side and other liberals like Harkin, Lautenberg, and Reed. (Reed as a key Democrat with military expertise and experience would be especially good. (I would have included Feingold, but he seems like he intends to say on the fence.)

If it is not because the party is to far to the left, then you tell me why the democratic party has lost the big majority it once had over the republican party. I think there is more invloved than just changing attitudes.

You have got to be kidding.

Barack defended Hillary on both her MLK/JFK gaffe *and* her spadework comment, saying he didn't think she was racist at all.

Bill said that black people only vote for Barack because he's black.

That is racist.

You don't hear Barack whining and crying that 70%+ of white women raised with Jim Crow era privleges vote against the black man, and saying it's just because she's an old white woman like them.

54. Starting out at DU with a blatantly racist post is a piss poor idea
and get it right, genius, the dem party is NOT losing voters. Go fucking educate yourself and read the Pew report- if you have enough brains to know what it is and to find it.

Welcome to DU. The exit is to the right.

73. Kennedy knows all three well
Edwards himself says that both he and Obama represent change. Like Kerry, Kennedy likely sees Obama as more likely to get that change by unifying people than Edwards through confrontation. Caroline Kennedy is saying that she is more inspired by him then any past President.

I realize that you are disappointed, but both Kennedys have the right to their choice and your attacks on various threads questioning their motives are unseemly. Both have proven who they are over a longer time with far more substantial actions than John Edwards, who was a relatively conservative Democrat in the 2004 primaries (attacking Kerry's healthcare and environmental plans as too expensive) with an even more conservative record.

76. Characterizing critique as attacks suggests something other than the inclusion that's being peddled.
Some comments are from people raising legitimate concerns and others are intended to destroy. If you can't make those distinctions, then how IS this "coming together" thingee supposed to work, unless it is predicated on some people being shut out of the coming together from the beginning. *IF* the message is that we can get along with those with whom we differ, your post suggests that that is a lie.

91. I was referring to the "they corporate candidates" thing
with Edwards being pure on this. Obama's work on ethics in the US and IL Senate is real. Edwards did not make that issue a major effort in his years in the Senate. There are others who fought against corporate of governmental corruption - like Feingold, Wellstone and Kerry - to name three, Edwards was not one people would have named in say late 2002 or 2003 - effectively the end of his Senate career.

59. The loathing of the Clintons runs deep.
They seem to have not made a lot of friends among liberal Democrats. Perhaps Bill ought to not have spent so much time shmoozing with Bushes. Perhaps that whole Carvile Matalin thing just irks people.

79. Obama earned it, not a Clinton backlash
From October of 07

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/01/kennedy.endorsement.ap/index.html

"Senator Clinton has a tremendous amount of respect for Senator Kennedy, and she considers him a friend," said Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee. "We would love to earn his support in this campaign."

Kennedy's relationship with Obama does not stretch nearly as far back, but the two have struck up a friendship.

"He gave me a good bottle of wine," Kennedy joked of Obama's gift. "I'm sure it was an American wine."

Above all else, Kennedy said, he is looking for a candidate who can light a spark with voters. The policy differences between the candidates are relatively small, he said.

"Inspiration," Kennedy said. "I'm looking for a candidate able to galvanize the country to get things done. I want to find the candidate who can inspire people. That's what we need. That's what our party needs."

He said he expects the crowded field "might winnow down by mid-December. That's when people really get engaged in presidential politics."

The value of endorsements tends to get overblown in presidential politics. But Kennedy's popularity with liberal party activists who tend to dominate early voting states puts his support at a premium.

Kennedy can also lend organizational muscle by sending his Massachusetts supporters across the border to neighboring New Hampshire, the leadoff primary state. He boasts a broad national fundraising and political network as well.

"Most endorsements aren't worth much," said veteran Democratic consultant Michael Shea. "But if you get Kennedy's endorsement, it's really worth something. He wants to win.
