Still in the race, an Edwards Supporter checks in-
I wrote this in response to Saracat right here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x4221464
And I wanted to toss it into an OP so Edwards Supporters could check in. I want to thank Sara for her thoughtful post, and I want the people to read this that are not Edwards Supporters to take heed. I don't just vote, I get involved. As do a lot of Edwards Supporters, please, I'm asking you to keep that in mind when you post in the future.

I'll vote for D in the GE, it's what I've always done. That's the easy part. But I've said here all along, the only person that can end my support of John Edwards for President, is John Edwards. There is nothing fair weather about a guy that grew up a Cubs fan, and loved the Niners, not just in the hay days of the 80s through the mid 90's. No, I was a fan in the 60's and 70's too, and trust me, it was brutal. That guy is me. Hell, I've never gotten to vote my favorite candidate in the GE, and I'm not about to give up on that chance and the hope of casting a vote in the GE for John Edwards. Like Sara says, it ain't over, not by a long shot.

As I said, I'll give any Dem my vote, no way I'll cop out on that, but will I give my activism? Will I volunteer? That is left to be decided. I may try it like this, every time I see someone posting more chicken shit about John Edwards dropping out of the race, I"ll take a day off. If I went retro-active on this, hell, Barack or Hillary would be in a hole for my volunteer days.

One other thing, we're all grown ups here, I hope, and I'm going to ask other Edwards supporters to check in now, and say you'll check D when the time comes. Enough crazy talk here at Democratic Underground about not supporting the Democratic Candidate. We gotta do it, sorry guys. Now, when you check in here, and make that pledge, know that you're also making a pledge to work twice as hard now for Edwards. I'm not tiring in my support, and if you want to stop, then we don't need you on the bus.

I think it's no secret that I can't stand Hillary and Obama at this point, and if anyone has a problem with that, I guess that will have to be their problem. I think they are over hyped, overdone, and we are overloaded on their shit. But will I vote for either one of them? You bet. At the end of the game, you shake hands, it's that simple people.

Now I'm asking nice, please quit posting crap, about my boy. Let's do this like grown ups here.

D in November, with or without Edwards, but until the convention - EDWARDS Working to get Edwards as many votes and delegates as possible because America needs his voice and efforts.

and here is a good explanation to the supporters of other candidates who think we should throw in with them:

7. since dennis is out Edwards will get our 3 california votes. Just say no to war supporting
corporate candidates unless there is NO viable option other than voting for a republican. Because unlike many on DU, we will vote for the nominee even if it is a bible thumping fundie democrat. let's just hope our scripture spouting candidate will be better than their religion pusher. For the record on that issue, we do not consider ourselves to be "sinners" born with curse of original sin and destined to go to hell if we don't share the religion of any particular politician.

18. It's awfully damn cool when a great candidate attracts strong-willed,
clear-headed, good-hearted people, -- traits definitional to the OP.

Economic justice is a big deal. John Edwards has made it the cornerstone of his campaign. He knows what he's talking about and he has drawn volunteers like the OP to the campaign. Miles have been traveled. Doors have been knocked on. Hearts and minds have been won.

John Edwards' delegates will arrive in Denver this fall as committed to economic justice as ever.

That matters.

And the bastards took him out. 68 was a crash course in power in America and what it takes to make a dent in it.

Still in the fight, after all these years.

Have fun voting. I figure by first Tuesday in June, when I get to mark a ballot with a pencil, I will be voting for Edwards to wield some sway over decisions. But I cling to the hope that he can carry the standard and it just might be my one little hand counted ballot that puts him over the top.

I hope each Edwards supporter carries that hope and goes out to vote.

Many would be great leaders probably got the message. We seem to be blessed with more coming to the fight again. I hope to leave the political life of America better than I found it on a day in
June of 68

The dream has remained alive in many hearts. When enough of the people will lead, the leaders will follow.

and I truly respect the fact that John Edwards had the guts to say even if he is not the nominee, to vote for the Dem period no matter who it is on Olberman last week.

As much as I would really dislike voting for a certain candidate if they are the eventual nominee, I know that I must tow the line and vote Democrat.

With both houses and the Big House in hand, stuff WILL happen. But on WHO'S terms? Wait a minute! I hear an echo in the back of my cranium. It's reminding me to "Follow the Money". Look at that news story on the front page: Companies put correcting their Eco-erroneous ways somewhere WAY down their list of priorities! 49. Count me in , too - hoping I get to see John Tuesday in Tulsa!
Edwards plans Tulsa visit

John Edwards' presidential campaign announced Saturday that the Democratic hopeful will be in Tulsa on Tuesday to discuss his plans to fight for working families and the middle class.

"Powerful entrenched interests are standing in the way of the change our country desperately needs," Edwards said in a press release. "We need to stand up for the middle class and American jobs before it's too late. Saving the middle class is going to be an epic battle, and that's a fight I was born for. I know that if we stand together, we can take back our country. We can build the One America we all believe in."

Edwards is scheduled to appear at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at the TWU No. 514 Hall, 11945 E. Pine St. The event is free and open to the public.

Edwards' visit will come one week before Oklahoma's Feb. 5 presidential primary.

I agree whole-heartedly with the OP. This is a race that ain't over by a long shot.

Let me tell you who ought to quit this race.

Mitt Romney ought to, because he's a lying two-faced, three-faced, half-assed flip-flopping asshole.

John McCain ought to as well, because he's a slavish bootlickin' Bush-huggin' war-mongering stooge.

Mike Huckabee ought to, because he's a graceless, bible-pounding, theocratic con man.

And Rudy Giuliani ought to -- which he will have the swift opportunity to accomplish by news time Tuesday night.

65. IF I can manage to tolerate feeling cheap and dirty and disgusted with myself..
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 02:06 PM by Triana
...in the GE - and knowing I'll go home and lose my dinner and not sleep for a week, I'll hide my eyes, hold my nose, and pull the D lever in the GE -- if one of the two "novelty" candidates - Obama or Clinton - is the nominee.

I know I will feel like I'd just gone downtown, stood on the streetcorner, and given a blowjob to the fist comer for a buck (YUCK) - but I'll try to pull that lever for O or C in the GE if one of them is the nominee.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I will have had to HOLD MY NOSE to vote for a Democrat. It's like - sticking your hand in the toilet. Eww!

I CANNOT STAND either Obama or Clinton. I had respect for both a few weeks ago but all this CRAP between them and lobbed at Edwards and the REDICULOUSLY DISGUSTING REPUBLICAN tactics both Obama and Clinton have used in their campaigns and their ARROGANCE, has just turned me off and I have absolutely no respect for either of them now.

NONE.

And they're both dirtied by WAAAY too much corprat money and REAL change in this country just ain't happenin with either of them.

I WILL NOT work for them, make calls for them, send them money or do ANY THING except *maybe* pull the darn lever - at the expense of my own health and the expense of the foundation of this nation - in the GE.

Not that they NEED my support - they DON'T. They have plenty of corprat $ and moronic supporters to keep them afloat.

I'll TRY -- and that's all I can give you.

We'll see.

AND MEANWHILE - as long as Edwards is in there - I'm RIGHT IN THERE WITH HIM. He's the ONLY candidate I could vote for in the GE without feeling like I'm sticking my hand in an unflushed toilet.

As so many people who talk about "wasting" a vote seem to think. Voting with your heart is the essence of true democracy!

And here's my response to anyone who tries to tell me otherwise:

105. good post...
and i'm with you in regard to edwards staying in 'til the end. he's my man. however... i will not vote D if he is not the guy. why? because i'm sick and tired of everything being the same and hillary or obama will be just the same.

furthermore, i've been a democrat, a green and a libertarian. i only changed back to D for edwards. i still root for the dems against the repukes and mostly vote D in general elections (i think it's a psychological sickness but that's another post for another day). HOWEVER, i am so disgusted with the democratic party right now and if edwards is not the guy, i'll vote for anyone else who's not a repuke. THE number one problem i see with the 2 party system is that everyone does the same thing - oh, we MUST vote with our party otherwise bad things will happen if we don't. well, bad things happen anyway because all the players know we're going to just go along to get along and they count on that. no. no more for me. i'm 51 and i'm sick to death of all of it. i would LOVE to see edwards run as a 3rd party candidate if he doesn't get the nomination. he has transcended the democratic party as it stands today. obama is the new jfk? well, edwards is the new rfk and i would take rfk over jfk any day (don't get me wrong, i'm a jfk fan my whole life, but rfk ROCKED). the whole endorsing hype is so political i cannot stand it! the democratic party in general (i'm talking the politicians) are so afraid of edwards because he threatens the applecart. the gravy train. i will not validate those politics anymore. so no thank you, but i respect your opinion.

116. Edwards is a fighter
Hope he keeps it up. Hmmm!, Obama is good at civil rights and might come in handy on immigration legislation...So said Teddy Kennedy. Those two things are important but what will the golden boy do with his spare time, those measures will be finished in no time. I think he will be like Bush and be a yes man in his bipartisan cabinet with the GOP calling the shots. Obama is not up on foreign policy, so he will likely rely on someone else to (il)advise him, nor is he a whiz bang on the economy and getting jobs back here in the USA, come to think about it, Obama says very little about jobs of late, yet again someone will (il)advise him. His insurance plan doesn't look so hot, so the insurance companies will (il)advise him on that. Nancy and Harry seen to want this senseless war to continue and I'm sure will have good advise for him. Do you really want another GWB running this country? If Obama is elected NAFTA will go on as usual and the NAFTA highway will certainly be a reality. If not Edwards I will vote for Hillary, but I will stick with edwards to the end.

I can not work my tail off for Hillary or Obama as I have other candidates in the past. I was burned in 2000, 2002, 2004, and most critically in 2006 and will not do that again for DINOs that are only slightly better than the Republicans. I will, however, work 24/7/265 for Edwards. He is the only honest person left standing, the only one that will use the bully pulpit to call out those who have subverted our country and sold out the American people. I will work feverishly to see that members of the DLC are replaced by real Democrats where possible and I will work to get both our party and our country back!

141. Wow, I was at the Davis Farmers Market just Saturday morning!
It's a small world. We were tabling for Edwards, and we met some great people, and signed up a few volunteers. Howdy neighbor! Sacramento checking in.

148. Awesome!
Small world, indeed! Glad you had a break in the weather for the Farmer's Market. We took advantage of the nice weather to make some deliveries to local animal shelters which are in dire need of certain items.

It's a pleasure to meet you!

Peace...

And I took home a bag of kettle corn. Yum. We've got one more Saturday before Super Tuesday, so we'll have a crew there again this Saturday.

157. Ah, yes, the kettle corn...
We love that stuff and typically get a big bag when we're there. Yes, they do have great food--quite a selection and everyone is very friendly. If we're not too full from sampling, we often go across the street to our favorite Davis restaurant, Crepeville. If we are out and about on Saturday and make it to the market, I will make it point to stop by and say, "Hi!" the Edwards crew.

150. you're a great supporter, and your passion for Edwards is convincing
don't ever give up.

he is not going away.

i'm trying to engage obama supporters on another thread, and get, to be honest, nice but unconvincing arguments.

it remains nothing but blind trust on their parts, as far as i can tell.

i want a fighter. our party needs a fighter. it's not pretty out there, no matter how rosy someone's rhetoric is.

i fear we are throwing a kitten to a den of rottweilers. i dislike rottweilers, but i also have little use for mauled kittens.

156. Thanks Venable-
Edwards is a man who refuses to speak in sound bite ready made for the mases. As I've told everyone who will listen, take him for a drive, kick the tires, he's the real deal.

Thanks for checking in. We've got phone banking, tabling, and honk and waves going everyday up until Super Tuesday right here in Sacramento. Went to a house party for Edwards tonight, and lot's of new faces were there.

I've always had a D next to my name, not a Duh.

155. You are so right.. People who do support Edwards are doers... We
see what John is talking about, either because we are or have walked it ourselves, or it has been ingrained in us as we grew up. His message speaks to people because its so dead on.. and its not about "historic" content or a "new" image... its about real work that goes past Hope. Hope doesn't fill your belly or pay the rent or any of the things so many people in America and around this world so desperately need.

You are right, at the end of the day, if I don't get to vote for Edwards in the GE, I'll hold my nose, cry as usual, and vote for D. And pray to God my family survives 4 more years of corporate, fascist control.

167. K&R! Edwards is helping the party and the people, not "hurting" other candidates.
He's driving the rhetoric of the other candidates into increasingly Populist territory. Hopefully, the party platform will be similarly influenced.

The Edwards campaign has not stooped to the mudslinging we've seen from the camps of the other candidates. Let's all follow that example.

168. Nope. You "gotta do it."
It's shameful there aren't many left in the party who understand or care about what Edwards is saying. Welcome to a soulless corporate party.

Support the nominee, you say, come what may? Please; don't make me laugh. Many on the left won't be voting for the pro-war, pro-outsourcing gorgon after her coronation.

That's the way it goes with self-determination in a free society. If your independence ceases after party bosses tell you who to vote for, that's your affair; good luck with choking back your "principles."

169. This is the truth!!!
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 09:04 AM by Rammy
This is the truth!!!

I was leaning towards Edward's for the most part, that was until this last debate when it was set in stone as to who will get my vote come the GE..

Watching those 2 bicker like little kids was an childish argument of he said she said, that seemed would not end and was an embarrasment. As Edwards sat patiently and silently through this, the first few words out of his mouth should have showed the COUNTRY, for god's sake the DEMOCRATIC community who the primary choice should be in this election.

Would it be cool to break the traditional mold of whom the president should be, and be a democrat at that? YES
Should it be this election, with the choices we have to break the mold? NO - Point blank, pointing at the last debate proves this.

I know I do not post much, so this post will probably be over looked, but here in the past few months this board is increasingly becoming what I would think the freeper board would look like.

You have your die hard, balls to the wall Dem's who to me display all the hate towards any candidate other then the one they signed on to support. These people who do not think or look outside the box, remind me of several people I work with that are repugs and will only vote that way. Even if someone they voted for, they defend on a daily bases becomes the lowest rated President in United States History. They do not waiver, they make excuses even if provided facts, so will in their mind justify what choices they made is the best one.

Do really need someone as head of our Great Country, who has received huge corporate donations, and another candidate who is receiving huge endorsements from celebrities, and also gets a lot of money from corporations too?

Or do you want someone who with every opportunity that he gets, only talks about what is wrong in AMERICA, and has plans already on how to make changes?

There is only ONE thing that is important to me in this election CHANGE. With this there is ONE candidate who has not changed anything in his campaign since day 1, and that is John Edwards. He will be the one that gets my vote, and hopefully people will start to see he is the best choice for the democratic party this year.

What a dick. We're fighting for something real for the American people, and if you don't get that, then get the hell out of our way.

Why do you anti-Edwards idiots always use sports terms, or b-movie terms to describe things. I feel like I'm at a WWF Cage Match half the time with you people. "Squashed like a bug" "Body Slammed."

What a joke for someone that obviously lives in the wonderland of TV, and multimedia, to lecture me on reality, get a life.

By the way, who do you support? (I need to know, so I can subtract a day of activism for that candidate.) Never mind, I bet I know who it is.
