South Carolina: The Second Civil War

History tells us that the first shot of the Great Civil War was fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. So began the long tragic story for freedom for the American slaves. Through Reconstruction and thru Jim Crow, the black people endured. And no state more manifested the Old South than did South Carolina.

But, ironically, today in South Carolina, a black man won the biggest individual political victory of any black man in history. He won the most votes in the primary for President of the United States. It was only fitting that it would happen in South Carolina.

It is not about racism. It is not even about politics. It is about freedom. Free at last! Free at last! If only for today, we are free from the racism and hatred of the past. We can only hope that it lasts and that it is real. We must hope. It is our duty as human beings.
