You are all a bunch of stinking warmongers
Most of you anyway.

This is the only possible explanation for supporting candidates that do not want to cut the military budget.

8. No, I don't see
But then 'boojum' is a new one on me.

But like the OP suggests, those who wantonly proscribe an even higher military budget, may be a warmonger. Maybe?

'Tis nothing to make light of; this increase in killing machinery, eh?

it seems.
I notice too that there has been a sea change of support toward wars and more wars and rumours of even more - as long as it is a Dem saying this, than it's all well and good. Noble even. ya know, security and all that rot. can't appear weak. gotta save that powder. what will the repugs say? what will Fox say? gotta be 'strong'. might is right.

and that silly Kucinich and his ideas about a Department of Peace. what a lamer. :sarcasm:

Did Bill Clinton campaign on cutting the military budget? I know he did once in office, but did he dare say so beforehand?

31. I think GHWBush was the first one to call it that
Here's a good article about it (it's actually about Mitt Romney, but goes into some detail about defense spending)
http://www.factcheck.org/more_mitt_missteps.html

The military cuts started under GHWB, and went on for awhile under Clinton, but started to climb back up by the mid-90s-- coincidentally, about the time the GOP started making big gains in Congress and tried to nail Clinton as "soft" on defense (sound familiar?). Which is funny, because Democratic presidents have historically had defense budgets as big or bigger than those of Republicans (remember JFK's "missile gap" in the 1960 campaign?).

I think some have unrealistic expectations.

Many US citizens are scared to death of the big bad boogeyman.

I'd rather focus on jobs, healthcare... and not alienate any frightened "mushy middle" votes.

36. I think if you framed it correctly
i.e., based it on Pentagon waste and bad priorities and not as "cuts" to the military per se.

For example, most people would be outraged to find out that there's $1 trillion missing from the Pentagon budget. If you frame that as money that's not spent on making sure our troops don't have the equipment they need, you could probably do alright.

35. DLC loves the military industrial complex
Let's just look at the cold, hard facts about the DLC and its record. The DLC has pushed, among other things, the war in Iraq and "free" trade policies, using bags of corporate money to buy enough Democratic votes to help Republicans make those policies a reality. They have chastised anyone who has opposed those policies as either unpatriotic or anti-business -- even as a majority of Americans now oppose the war in Iraq, oppose the DLC's business-written trade deals, and are sick of watching America's economy sold out to the highest corporate bidder. Additionally, in brazenly Orwellian fashion, the DLC has also called its extremist agenda "centrist," even though polls show the American public opposes most of their agenda, and supports much of the progressive agenda. http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0727-32.htm
