Help me out here, my Sister says that neither Obama or Hillary are electable
That our Country may say it's ready for a Woman or an African American President, but we really aren't! She says if those are the choices she will not vote, period! We MUST nominate John Edwards, but he isn't doing as well as the others. Have the Democrats thought about the fact that Edwards is the only one that will beat the Republicans???????? Help!

2. It sounds like she's the one that isn't ready for a black or female president.
It's called projection.

7. Bull mother fucking shit!
Acknowledging that racism exists isn't racist.

And claiming it's all projection isn't realistic.

10. Perhaps you should read the OP again.
It quite specifically says that her sister will not vote for either of them.

Tell me again why we should discount projection?

19. You're right -- I take back half of what I said.
I knee-jerked that one because I'm way past my limit of hearing that anyone who allows that racism (or sexism) exists is somehow guilty of it.

I did overlook the part where she won't vote for either on that basis -- that makes no sense. Sorry.

Other hand: The South votes in great, big, determined, Southern Baptist-dictated blocks. Many there are still pretty overt racists and most -- MOST -- attend churches that tell them women should be submissive to men. A lot of those people will not do anything to put a minority or a woman in charge. There's a real issue there.

But I did jump on your post too hard. Sorry.

23. Oh, I definitely agree that sexism and racism are factors in this.
No problem - we're all guilty of jumping too soon! :)

I do not doubt that many of us underestimate how much latent sexism and racism remains in this country. It's significant, particularly (as you noted) in the South, and it could certainly be the X-factor in this election. Nobody really knows what effect it'll have because there really isn't a solid way to measure it. Some people don't even know that they're sexist and/or racist.

In this particular case, though, I think that the sister is using her personal beliefs to make an assumption that the country at large *must* feel the same way. Like I said, I don't think there's any way to know the full extent to which that might be true.

9. Why bother? The Republicans will win if these are our nominations.......
Look, I want Edwards! But I will vote Democratic. And this shows me that there are some people out there who will just not vote.

5. I dunno. She may be right.
Sad to say but there more than just a few people who think that way.

I had a person say to me yesterday that he was scared that someone other than McCain would take the repub nomination because he was the least weird republican and the country would not elect either either Barak or Hillary because of the woman/black thing.

6. My friend thinks the same
Yesterday as the debate was on tv he said neither Hillary or Obama can win. I disagreed, but I think Hillary can win, Obama would be a much more difficult option, based not on gender or color but political skills. My friend likes Romney and is a republican but tends to be objective.

16. By the OP reasoning, that would be "two strikes".
I'd guess that Clinton/Obama is unlikely. As is Obama/Clinton.

Either one puts the election at risk of a prejudicial defeat. I think the DLC would talk either one of them out of the combination.

Get real, you think we're going to put two "Illini" on the same ticket? :)

18. I think McCain's strength is overstated.
Someone posted a poll where they asked people to identify the level of their support (definitely vote for, may vote for, will consider, definitely vote against, etc.) and his "definitely vote against" numbers were high, and his "definitely vote for" numbers were pretty weak. Most of his support was of the "may vote for" or "will consider" variety.

It's a poll, of course, so what it's worth in real terms is debatable. I just found it interesting that his support looks solid on the surface but may not hold up long-term.

20. Your sister is correct
the Republicans would love to run against Hillary or Obama, they will crush either one in the general election after they spend unlimited amounts of money to scare Americans into voting for Mccain.

26. The racist GOP absolutely detests anything Clinton
The GOP hatred should not be discounted or underestimated and on this basis Obama and Clinton have unquestionable Electability issues. In the end game, it's not how WE view our candidate but how THEY do when the GE comes around.

28. I can't believe the cynicism here.
People who think that all is lost and that we'll be stuck with another Republican president would never survive a campaign! Sheesh! Are you hoping that if you expect the worst, you won't be disappointed! C'mon--have some hope and some courage!

this country isn't ready for a black or female president.
