AP: Hillary Conceding SC to Obama
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton is limiting her time in South Carolina even though the presidential primary is just five days away, a recognition of rival Barack Obama's chances of winning the state and a reflection of her own long-term strategy.

The New York senator planned to campaign Tuesday and Wednesday in states scheduled to hold contests Feb. 5, including California, New Mexico and New Jersey. She was scheduled to leave South Carolina after Monday's televised debate and not return until Thursday.

8. Obama already has the majority of the black vote....
If you watched the debate, it was obvious. All of the blacks applauded Obama, and only a few ever applauded Hillary. She needs to cut her losses and move on.

9. There you go again..
mutter and splutter..Hillary is leaving SC for Obama and JE to fight it out. She doesn't NEED SC to win the nomination.. SC is John Edwards Home Turf and Obama is looking for the AA vote. Smart move by Hillary!

13. for once we agree.
She has no upside here. She would have to go negative. and in so doing it would likely be seen as shrill or negative, Would not endear her to anyone in the south. There is no upside in staying in the state.

7. If you leave for three days.... you are conceding it.
I don't blame her it is a smart tactic....Look Obama is likely to win the state.. the only way you beat him is to go negative. WHich would only serve to piss off voters you want in the Fall. You eother wind up sound shrill or racist. There is no upside to spending three days somewhere you are going to lose.

29. I haven't looked at the stats in SC..
Edwards has to depend on the white vote. Some of the AA vote will split for Hillary and Obama. Hillary had a good chance of stealing votes from both Obama and Edwards... and she is wise to stay away until the end.

6. folks praying for cabinent positions
from the article

Asked whether Clinton's absence from the state in the week before the primary sent a negative message to black voters, campaign officials noted that several prominent black surrogates had come to campaign for her here, including Reps. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and attorney Vernon Jordan. Supporters from the Congressional Black Caucus toured the state by bus for her during the weekend

Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 11:25 PM by dkf
Even though Obama looked like he would lose Nevada handily, he still fought for it, and he came very very close.

I thought she was a fighter?

Is this how she is going to run the national campaign? Conceding states she can't win? That is not good.

20. I don't think Clinton can win SC
So it would probably be best if she limits her time there to prepare for the big battle on Feb 5th

....she ain't conceding nuthin....Anyway, she can win delegates without winning the popular vote.

And it's all about delegates, as they say so often around here.

23. She's pulling a Giuliani. Compete hard, then if a week before the primary it looks like you're going
to lose you leave the state and claim after you get your butt kicked in the voting that you weren't competing there anyway. HRC to corporate media: please ignore the results in South Carolina because I wasn't trying to win there.

26. I't pretty hard to deny..
the battle will be fought by Edwards and Obama. Edwards is in fighting mode and will damage Obama more than anything Hillary can do or say. Women are known for being long on memory.. the women committed to her will be in her corner regardless. This is going to be a fun race to watch..

30. If I recall correctly, S. Carolina is 53% evangelical.
Obama's surrogates' gay-baiting has probably gone over very well there. Add in the heavy African-American support he has in the state, and it's probably wise of Hillary to put her major effort on the 2/5 states where she stands a good chance of a sweep.

32. SC isn't critical for her; it is for Obama
Which is why I thought she'd focus hard on it and try to keep it close, but she must think that with the limited amount of time between SC and Super Tuesday, her time was better spent on that election.
