So, no need to go after the evangelical right wing freakos.
Saying your Christian does NOT make you Christian.
I do NOT want to court the evangelical bigots.

I don't need to join forces with those fucktards for any reason.

85. Oh, I beg to differ
I'm guessing you weren't alive during the '76 campaign.

Carter took a lot of flack from many northern liberals (mainly supporters of Udall, Church, and Harris) for his overt displays of religiosity. Many northerners were in a tizzy, thinking he was a stealth version of George Wallace.

91. Read "Marathon"
It's a book by Jules Witcover that chronicles the 1976 campaign from Watergate to the general election. It's a long book, but it is a fascinating read.

There is a lot of material that discusses the cultural gap that Carter faced once he broke out as a national candidate. There were elements of his political style that made sense in the Georgia context that didn't translate in places like Pennsylvania and Mass. Likewise, Udall, a liberal Mormon, was DOA in much of the South. Meanwhile, you had Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphre laying claim to blue collar Catholics.

The book is out of print, but many decent size libraries have a copy (or can find one via interlibrary loan). The book is one of the most important works on modern political history, and it will show you that Carter was not the liberal icon back in the early days of his national career.

I also followed the campaign into New Hampshire, and still there was no religious pandering from Carter.

Where he beat back Wallace for the Southern conservative Dem vote.

You'll also recall that Carter got his ass handed to him in the Mass primary when Scoop Jackson obliterated him in conservative Dem strongholds like Southie. Part of this was attributable to cultural discomfort.

"Evangelical" is a particular subset of Christianity, and it is by no means synonymous with "conservative" or "fundamentalist" (note that there are even liberal fundamentalists).

what we don't want is the fucking ASSHOLES who condemn the GBLT community and the people who try to "woo" them.

Actually, if that were true, you WOULD have phrased it "I am a Christian AND I believe in gay rights."
You need to be here a while to understand this board and religion. There are many (and I do mean MANY) people of FAITH (not religion) here that want, seriously and truly want, there to be a taking back of faith from the right-wing moralists. The right-wing has taken faith and religion and made it into an us-vs-them thing. The whole "war on Christmas" is a right-wingers wet dream. There is no "war on Christmas."
Don't take offense and listen and learn....and understand.

38. then good luck finding a candidate to vote for- cause they are ALL
prostituting themselves LibraLiz.

and you are a fool if you don't understand that.

You need to spread your outrage more honestly- you sound like a bigot when you pick on ONE of three self- defined "christians".

may you understand
Peace~

on some very important issues.

52. Again. I don't care.
Their votes are exactly the same as the votes of the people who have beliefs you share.

Would you honestly encourage them to vote against your candidate? What if their votes could win the election for your candidate?

62. By this logic we should start pandering to the KKK for votes too.
I'm sorry- some votes don't mean as much to me as others.
I'm not going to get behind courting the rabid Evangelicals who are anti-gay.
I am allowed to have that opinion.

Would I encourage them to against my candidate? No. I do not think I would have to.

The rabid evangelicals I am speaking of would NEVER vote for a Democrat. At least not one that believes in gay rights and a womans right to choose.

53. Frankly you're going to have to accept that they are Americans too.
Your choice is either to try to bring them into the Democratic party, or you can leave them in the Republican party and live under the constant threat of Republican control. That is your choice.

You cannot dismiss their existence
You cannot dismiss their right to vote
