He is obviously exhausted and making a huge effort to stay awake during a remakably boring speaker. Attack Bill for good reason if you want but this is just mean spirited and petty.

2. I am concerned for his health...This is not the first time he's fallen asleep in public since his
quadruple bypass. Wasn't it either last year or year before last, he was seen sleeping at that game? I forget whether it was a baseball/basketball game.

This is a 61-year old man who had quadruple bypass several years ago...and with the extremely busy schedule he keeps, I hope he is taking care of his health.

4. I wonder too. Heart conditions cause oxygen deprivation, which puts you to sleep.OTOH, that speech
was enough to do it to anyone, even if they weren't exhausted.

25. Right--that's why I am concerned for him and his heart. By the way, can I just commend you?
I know you aren't a Clinton fan....in fact, you and I have had some knock-down drag outs here on DU, I believe.

But I just want to commend you for your post here. Thank you. The behavior of some other DUers on this is disgusting.

44. I don't think it was the speaker as much as he probably was up all night doing homework...
I thought he was cute trying to keep his eyes open. When your that tired you can fall asleep at the drop of a hat.
He did well catching minutes at a time and I bet he felt better afterwards even though his nap was fleeting..

Your post was the first I'd heard of it, so I sought out the video. He probably should have taken a less prominent seat if he couldn't keep himself awake.

9. I don't think you get to choose when you are a former Prez and a candidate surogate.
Also, I don't think he could have predicted how he would feel. It has happened to me.I din't "know" I would have trouble remaining alert.

12. Yes, former Presidents have very little power
Seems to me like he probably could have arranged to sit in the front row. Of course, there is a certain benefit to being on camera at such an event. (But only if you can stay awake, avoid looking at your watch, etc.)

17. Like I said, he couldn't have "predicted" this.Would you have him get up and move
in the middle of the speech? Because that would have been the point you would be aware of your trouble with staying awake.

Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 07:21 PM by fishwax
Neither of us really knows whether he could have predicted, since neither of us knows his state of mind before the ceremony. But that's neither here nor there.

He is, as you say, a sort of candidate surrogate, and his position on camera reflects that role. On the one hand, it provides exposure and a certain cache. On the other hand, it's potentially risky if you fidget, fall asleep, take a big look at your watch, etc.

Cache (cash) is a stash of goods. Cachet (cashay) is a mark of distinction.

(There's a visit to the way-back machine. Haven't posted that since all those military guys were out there finding cashays of weapons in the first year of the invasion.)

Thank you. You may go about your business.

23. You're calling Martin Luther King III's son a "boring speaker"? You're absurd.
Apart from being just plain wrong - his speaking style was just as dynamic as Bill Clinton's in that video, if not more so.

This just highlights the desperation of the "I hate Obama" crowd here at DU.
