Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 12:02 AM by goku2008
The only way to win elections is to get repukes and indies to vote for you, and mccain would have a lock on that in the general, if hillary is the nom. repukes who hate mccain would come out to vote just so the hil doesn't win, and we might see some of our dems do that also , we saw that in michigan, the hil flaunts that repukes in upstate new york voted for her, well, being from upstate ny, i can tell you it is very moderate up here, she will never get the bread and butter repukes to vote for her, and indies will go for mccain in huge numbers, edwards would have a fighting chance against mccain if he had kept the 2004 edwards, he went far left to get the base, but it has failed, the only dem. that can compete with mccain with indies, and repukes, and still hold the dem base is the great senator from illinois barack obama

3. Respectfully disagree. Any of our Dems will kick the stuffing out of McCain.
His winning vote total in SC was less than his losing vote total there in 2000.

He might possiby win the GOP nomination. But then we squash him.

68. McCain is pretty popular with Republicans
who are fearful of the other extreme RW candidates. Amnesty and illegal flow could lose the Democrats lots of votes anywhere.

MCain is from the old Congress who believed in democracy. His politics now seem cloudy to me. I'm not sure what he stands for except more war.

71. I agree -- he seems to be more pro-war than ever. The "maverick" McCain
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 09:50 AM by Old Crusoe
is blurred now mostly because of that Bush-hug and slavish support of The Surge.

I add to that his expressly repellent right-wing voting record and feel, in an age where domestic issues still matter a lot, that we can whup him.

Ohio and Missouri would be pivotal states for us, but I think we swipe Colorado this time, and maybe some others. If McCain is their nominee and we nominate Richardson for veep, we take New Mexico back as well.

78. I couldn't disagree more
If you lurk on any of the true conservative boards, not the neocon boards, you'll find that conservatives and fundies absolutely hate McCain. Mostly this is attributable to McCain–Feingold and his amnesty plan. Not to mention McCain often reaches across the isle like he did with Feingold and with Kennedy (Kennedy-McCain) which really pisses the wingers off.

Everything I've read is that most hard corps conservatives will protest if McCain is nominated by either not voting at all or voting independent. Either way, we could nominate a tree and it would beat McCain.

Even the republicans are mad at Bush and his backers. Bush is in the teens in some polls. Support for the war is at an all time low and McCain and Rudy have both made it clear that the war can go on forever, and they would be happy with it. They are toast no matter what.

I don't think they have one viable candidate.

And I guess I wish everyone here would feel more together, HAPPY about our candidates and chances, rather than parroting what the media says about Hillary.

Look how much they've been able to predict thus far.

A LOT of women are going to come out and vote for her. A LOT.

67. The media won't allow a candidate who is anti-war to win
in either party even though the American people demanded it in 2006. Now that is worth talking about.

They didn't predict the win of Kerry in Iowa either in 2006. Look how they chose Dean to win? He failed miserably because of his WTO policy. Unions were angry when he ignored them.

I don't know who they poll but they seem to be always wrong. Is this to sway the vote?

70. You need more than that to win
Both the Afro-American community and the Hispanic one are minorities. They are angry about the illegal flow taking their jobs. They don't want amnesty. They see where the Democrats are acting just like the Republicans regarding the war funding, etc. Which would you chose?

Women vote more Democratic than Republican but then there the religious influence, etc. The churches are trying to get their vote for a candidate. Why not candidates are going to them for votes? I'm am so angry at the Democrats for doing this. It is unconstitutonal guys!!

Democrats are told over and over they lose election after election because they forget their base (and the vast middle class). The base is the American middle class workers. What have they done for them but force NAFTA. Patriot Acts, and world government on them (not that the Republican haven't done the same thing).

So where is the big difference between them to encourage people to vote Democratic? It seems to me that the media and church clergy has more of a vote then we do.

82. Do we? Also, we do have more than that, and she is speaking to the middle class.
Latino's overwhelmingly voted for Clinton in Nevada. She is supported by Delores Huerta and Chavez son.

They are not as a group angered about 'illegal flow'. They don't appreciate the same old racist attacks on them by those touting border control and deporting people. I can't believe you even think that. The only reason the Republicans get some of their votes at times is because many are Catholic and the conservatives, as you point out, pander to that (as you point out).

It never has been enough to get them even close to a good showing of minority voters, and it sure won't be this time when they choose to make 'illegal immigration', code word for 'get the Mexican's' their big issue next to the war. The economy is so bad too.

holding a Bible like clergy and talking about his run for office in the Southern churches just hits me the wrong way. How dare he violate our Constitution. Can't these groups hear him in public areas? He leaves out the people who aren't of that religious group. He gives them a voice\power over others.

Now Hillary is doing it.

Early polling is a mixed bag. several have hrc ahead by 2 to 4 as some do for mccain, but hrc will have the better message and will maintain the blue states and it will be harder for mccain to hold on to all the reds.....Oh I will enjoy this campaign as we have a fighter that wants to be president.....

I have no idea who beats McCain. I think it's McCain with that video of the 100 years Iraq War.
What a damning clip that is.

But I bet he does himself in. He's well known to have real fits of rage with his colleagues. He's
running a hypocritical campaign, pandering to beat the band, and running is exhausting. I think he's
due for a meltdown against another in the field or some news type. That would do it.

Look at the issues:

Rated over 40% as EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Economy, Iraq, Terrorism, Health Care. McCain loses on three out of four of those. No faith in the R's on the economy and health care and McCain wants to be in Iraq forever. There's enough on the R's for poor handling of Terrorism to blow them away. I think everybody beats McCain or any other Republican.

64. Welcome to DU!!!

I think all this talk of a competitive presidential race ends up supporting those who say that the
party has to move to the center (so close, we must be like them). Then we end up with candidates who
are bland, present no real alternatives to the Republicans, and end up losing because they figure
if the party won't fight for itself, how can it fig ut for us. It's all a series of bad assumptions
based on nothing. The public is highly disposed to progressive programs and populist challenges.
Nevertheless, we have an decent chance of winning even with the bland scenario, although you never
know.

Enjoy!

75. Thank you for seeing this happening too
It happened in the 2006 election. It wasn't close but stolen.

Most people just threw up their hands in frustration and said, well it was very close so let's let it be...including Pelosi.

Bullshit.

Is the economy going to get suddenly better?
Will the war suddenly end and the troops come home?
Will Bush suddenly become an effective leader?

Slam dunk win for the democrats this year.
