Who have you supported in past primaries?
2 part question:

1) Who did you support throughout the 2004 primary?

and

2) Who have you supported in past primaries?

This is my first primary so I don't have any input on this, but I'm curious about everyone else. Any and all anecdotes are also welcome. :)

1. john mccain, john kerry
2000 was the first time i was old enough to vote in a national election and in the primary i voted for mccain because i hated bush so much. but i always intended to vote for the democratic candidate in november. i leaned toward al gore more than bradley, but both were ok with me and gore seemed to pretty much have the election by then so i voted in the gop primary for mccain.

and right now i support john kerry of course. he was my one and only choice so far during the primary. but i do like many of the other 2004 primary candidates very much.

this is a good question, i was curious about people's choices in past primaries also, especially in 1992 and before when many candidates were on the ballot.

2. 1) hadn't decided when I first waded in here
Though it was between Clark and Kerry. I'll vote for Kerry March 9th.

2)Bradley in 2000 even though it was clear that Gore had everything pretty much sown up before they got here.

4. Wow, gotta think back...
88, Bruce Babbitt
92, Jerry Brown
96, I don't remember - I'm not sure I even bothered. Was Clinton unopposed?
00, Bill Bradley
04, Dennis Kucinich

Wow, there's a pattern of me supporting good guys who got their asses handed to 'em, isn't there? Why again do I bother with the primaries?

6. clinton was unopposed
in 1996. i sense some consistency with your choices. they all tend to be the more or most liberals running at the time. (i don't know anything about bruce babbitt other than he worked in the clinton administration. is/was he the liberal among the group running at the time as the others you list are?).

9. Babbitt
was Interior Secretary under Clinton, and for the most part was a good one, though he did some stuff I didn't much like. A principled man, he. His primary campaign was impressively no-bullshit, so of course he bit it. Wonder what he's up to nowadays...

There were a LOT of liberal choices in 1988, really - the party's rightward swing hadn't really happened yet. Jesse Jackson was an attractive candidate to liberals, as were Paul Simon and Paul Tsongas, to a lesser degree. Dukakis had good liberal credentials - I certainly wasn;t unhappy about the party selecting him to run - though that lib cred wound up costing him - that was the year that "liberal" suddenly became a cuss word.

Thanks for the reminder on Clinton's '96 run, BTW. Can't believe I couldn't remember that.

10. I wasn't quite old enough to vote in 1988
actually missed it by 6 days! but I did pay attention to it. I was fascinated by Paul Simon. Babbitt was pretty interesting too, though when he debated he couldn't stop licking his lips (shallow of me I know). Gore ran that year too (Tsongas was 1992).

Kind of amazed that Dukakis got the nomination, though I don't think the liberal tag did him in. I think it was the infamous debate and that very silly footage of him riding around in the tank.

14. You're right!
Boy, for only being 33, I've got the memory of Ronald Reagan. Tsongas was, of course, a candidate in '92, and though he won a bunch of states he ultimately lost out because a northerner of Greek ancestry was a painful reminder of Dukakis' humiliation; also he had some serious health problems. '88 was Dukakis, Jackson (won New Hampshire), Gore, Gephardt (won Iowa), Simon (who, like Edwards this year, was widely considered attractive as a candidate but kept coming in second), Babbitt, Hart and Biden - Biden being squeezed out after he got busted plagiarizing speeches. For his part, Biden's at least been consistent - he's STILL a dickhead.

5. I've been back and forth for the past nine months
Last June I was watching Dean and Kucinich. By August, I jumped on the Dean train and did some local work for the campaign. I still liked Kucinich's message but Dean was making more noise and getting more media attention. When Clark entered the fray, I was fully into ABB mode and looking for the strongest candidate to beat Bush. I thought Clark would do better one on one with Bush in debates and would pull in more swing voters. (I hate to admit I'm a former Republican, but that said, I feel I have a bit of insight on what will pull independents and swing voters over to this side).

Once the debates started, it seemed like Kucinich didn't have a prayer because of his image being a problem for most voters. (We all have to admit that image definitely IS an issue with the majority of Americans and sometimes DK is SO intense he looks like he wants to kill the other candidates - now I know that he's the peace candidate, but that's just the way he came across sometimes.)

Dean was dissappointing...he just didn't debate well. He looked so uptight and like he was trying to hard to remember what he was supposed to say, with his words forced out in a halting manner, ending on a weird note sometimes. Kucinich on the other hand...was always articulate and you could tell he believes completely what he says, so it isn't hard for him to communicate that when given the chance to speak.

The others were all "blah blah blah" for me....regular establishment politicians. Lieberman was the worst. During the debates (I had a lot of debate parties) we'd all get up to go to the kitchen and/or the bathroom when it was Lieberman's turn to talk. He was THAT bad.

Sharpton of course is old reliable when it comes to adding spark and entertainment to the debates. We were all grateful to have him in there, stirring the pot. My husband at many times has said he's just going to vote for Sharpton, just because he doesn't beat around the bush.

Now that the ridiculous primary process has whittled away several of the better candidates (Clark and Dean), I'm back to supporting the one who has said everything right from the beginning. I agree with Kucinich on most everything, so he will get my vote on Tuesday. It's almost like a protest vote for not allowing us to have a chance to vote for Clark or Dean. I mean, I know DK doesn't have a chance, but I just can't vote for Kerry or Edwards. Come November, I'll have to, but at least for this round, I can maybe help send some delegates to the convention who agree more with DK on the issues.

Being a former Repuke is nothing to be ashamed of. You should only be ashmaed if you still ARE a Repuke.

Glad to have you on board, and there's proof positive that the forces of evil can be beaten, and their minions CAN be converted to the true, righteous, and good path.

7. In early 2002-03 I supported Dean
Then I joined the Draft Clark campaign since it's beginning. (Spring- 2003)and have have been an active supporter and donor ever since. He is the first candidate I have ever donated to or campaigned for in my 60+ years.
Now I have consider myself a Clarkie for Kerry.

Previously (when I wasn't interested in politics) I stupidly voted for Reagan twice, Bush sr.once.and :puke: even Nixon once.

I finally got interested in politics and wised up when I got sick of Bush and voted for Clinton twice and Al Gore. I would never vote for any Republican again in my life. "Too late we get shmart" (sp?)

Come to think of it...I voted the same as Clark. Only he kind of had to do it due to his job and I did it out of stupidity and ignorance.

8. Started with McCarthy, 1968; Muskie (then McGovern) 1972. . .
Mo Udall, 1976; John Anderson (Independent) 1980; Mondale, 1984; Gary Hart (till he blew up) 1988; Bill Clinton, 1992; Bill Clinton, 1996; Al Gore, 2000; John Kerry 2004. Was very much thankful to Dean for identifying the rage against Bush, but felt early on that Kerry had the right stuff (I remember his work against the Vietnam War). Edwards is intriguing, as well. Respect Clark and Dean, but those are my choices. Kucinich and Sharpton? Hope they will continue to be important voices. Flame me, you youngsters!

11. My Previous Primary Picks
1992, I supported Jerry Brown

1996, I supported Clinton

2000, I got screwed out of voting in the primaries, due to a move...I moved from Kentucky, which had not yet had it's primary...to Texas, which already HAD had itt's primary. But I was a Bradley supporter. I wound up writing him in in the General Election, voting myself VP. It was a throwaway vote and I knew it...but, being as I knew Texas was going Bush no matter how many Gore votes got cast, I felt okay doing that.

2004, I started out Edwards, then hopped to Dean when his message attracted me, (this was before he was frontrunner) and I hung with him till he dropped, after Wisconsin. I then defected back to the Edwards camp, and cast my ballot accordingly in Early Voting in the Texas Primary.
In my heart, I'd love to support Kucinich, but since he had zero chance of beating Chimpy, I could not bring myself to support him.

I'll be solid Dennis in 2008, however, should he choose to run again...even if he does it third party. Unless there is some radical sea-change between then and now.

in '84 it was Jesse Jackson (I was even a Jackson delegate to the KY state caucus). This was my first primary.

in '88, I liked Fritz Hollings, but went w. Jackson as Fritz dropped before my primary.

in '92, I went w. Jerry Brown.

in '96, ?

in '00, I went w. John McCain (yeah, GOP, but he was a reformer and would have been a good candidate for the GOP...even then I didn't trust W).

This year I started with Kucnich, considered Clark & Edwards, and came back to Kucinich. I vote on Tuesday.

18. In 1968
I wasn't old enough to vote but was one of many college aged kids who supported McCarthy.

1972 - McGovern, though I probably wrote in McCarthy in the primaries.

1976 - I think I voted for Carter in the primaries.

1980 - For some bizarre reason I did a third party thing and supported Anderson.

1984 - can't remember who I supported in the primaries but voted for Mondale.

1988 - Can't remember. Jerry Brown maybe?

1992 - Jerry Brown or Paul Tsongas. Again, I can't remember the primaries.

1996 - Clinton

2000 - Voted for McCain. I did not want to see Bush in the WH. Didn't think McCain would be as much of a disaster.

2004 - Supported Clark. Haven't voted yet. Not sure what I'll do.

25. I supported Clark for this primary
obviously.:) , although I supported Dean before Clark entered the race (although not nearly as fervently or actively).

My first election was in 1984 and I strongly supported Gary Hart in that primary.

Since then, and up to now, I have never had a really strong preference or paid much attention to the primaries. Most of the candidates really didn't stand out much for me, and also the stakes didn't seem so high. My vote never mattered anyway since we're such a late state, so I was content to just let it play itself out, and vote for the Dem in November.

So essentially, I've fallen in love with candidates twice since I've been of voting age and both times they lost:-( . The rest of the time I've been fairly indifferent.

27. No one "throughout"
I was undecided until a few days before my primary, and chose Edwards. I still believe he is the best candidate to beat Bush, but it took me almost a year to make up my mind.

I've been around a while:

'72 - McGovern
'76 - Scoop Jackson
'80 - Kennedy
'84 - Hart
'88 - Gore
'92 - Tsongas
'00 - Gore

I have never regreted supporting any one of them to this day. My record of picking winners isn't so good at 2 our of 7, though!

30. 1) Clark!
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 02:00 AM by Tim_in_HK
2) let's see . . .
'84 - Mondale (but not old enough to vote; did wear a Mondale pin in high school, which in '84 was not a popular move at Catholic HS in Chicago . . .),
'88 - Biden, then Dukakis,
'92 - Harkin, then Clinton
'00 - No one.

Clark brought me back into caring about primaries.

*on edit* I can't vouch for the veracity of the years I've associated with the candidates! I also liked Hart. Was that '88 or '84?

Anyway, '04 was the first year I stuck with one candidate throughout the primary season. But (almost) always vote Dem in GE (one vote for Greens in '96 b/c I wasn't that happy with Clinton at the time).

32. Being in California it doesn't make a lot
of difference who I ever support because they are usually out of it long before I ever get to vote. It's hard to remember but I know I was for Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson and I think last time I voted for Bradley even though I knew it was going to be Gore (sometimes I just like to encourage the challengers).

This time I was for Clark and since it is likely that Kerry will get the nomination I will strongly support him for the GE. I have decided in this week's primary that I will vote for Kucinich.
