Okay, some ground rules, though.

1) It can be any of the folks that were in the running for the nomination this year, past or present.

2) It can be any Democrat, but they have to be currently living. (So no Harry Truman or FDR clones, lol).

3) It can't be Bill Clinton, 'cuz the Constitution says he can't be president anymore. I know, I know, the current occupants of the WH don't give two whits about the Constitution, but we do.

4) And they have to meet the requirements set forth in the Constitution for qualifications (US citizen, 35 y/o, etc.)

I still like Bill Bradley from 2000. I think I'd go with him.

Al Sharpton as president would mean that we'd have entertainment every day.

Edited on Sun Feb-29-04 10:58 AM by Wiscmason
Would be hard to pick just one so Ill give you my top ten instead.. in NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

1) Russ Feingold
2) Lloyd Bentsen
3) Paul Wellstone (may he rest in peace and his message never die)
4) Ann Richards
5) Al Gore
6) William Proxmire (may he also rest in peace)
7) Diane Feinstien
8) Mario Cuomo
9) John Edwards
10) Bill Richardson

...if you are wondering why I didn't include the great Hillary Clinton, it is not because I think the world of her, I just believe that 2004 would be the wrong time for her to run since the idiotic right wing would pull an Anti Clinton theme out of their backsides and really foul up this campaign..

Two guys who are good solid mainstream progressive populists.

(For the younger among you, Harris is the former Oklahoma Senator who challenged Jimmy Carter in the 76 election. He was an old country lawyer type who was the Dennis Kucinich of his day.)

75. I donated to Bradley in 2000. I think he woulda beat Bush handily.
The Gore candidacy just seemed weighted down with Clinton baggage. No matter that Gore was not to blame, but I think voters were just tired of hearing Rush and the right-wing screamers dump on Clinton/Gore.

I don't know who my 'ideal' candidate would be. Bradley is nearly 60 now. I was a bit surprised he never announced a run. Seems like he woulda run in 2004 if he was still interested. What more can you want than a Rhodes scholar, athlete, and Senator? The guy had it all going for him.
